Funny guy. Enjoyed his radio show and Christmas appearances on Letterman to tell the Lone Ranger story and throw a football at the meatball "star" on the tree

He filled in for Howard on Fridays on 101, but he also had his own show every day, most recently on Ch 94.. I listened to it almost every day on long drives for work; funny, when you listen to someone so much, and call in every so often, as i did-- you almost feel like you actually know them.. i never met the guy, though he apparently spent a lot of time in NOLA, he would often broadcast his show from a studio in Abita Springs when he was in the area.. Hearing the news today made me about as sad as you could get about a 'celebrity' death.. gonna miss that show, but he seemed to have lived a helluva life, and as mentioned, was a fine representative of what it means to be from New Orleans... Godspeed Jay.

It's a shame. I had no idea he had done so much. I remember the Cheers gig but not much else. Oddly, I knew he lived in Charlotte for a brief time in the early 70's as a radio personality. He came to my Jr. High for a celebrity/teacher basketball game....This was probably in '74 (?). Never figured him for a Southern guy...would've thought NE Jewish for some reason.

Yo may just know him from talk shows. I think he was one of those comedians that would fill in last minute if there was a cancellation and could hold court for a segment or two. I remember him from Cheers and Murphy Brown, but think of him more as a personality than any of his characters.
Kinda has a coach from Teen Wolf vibe about him, though imho fwiw.

I just listened to the Lone Ranger story...THAT happened here in Charlotte. The Radio station, WAYS, "Big WAYS",' is no longer but he mentioned Morehead 'St', etc...Anderson's Restaurant...

I never understood the trajectory of his career- I would hear him on satellite and then he's pop up here or there seemingly randomly . He referenced Nola a lot. Funny, funny guy - he kept it stupid - and I mean that in the best possible way. F cancer.

He narrated WLAE's "Glory Days: the History of the Catholic League in New Orleans."
I'm certain he appeared on Night Court a few times, too.
I have little respect left for Hollywood, but he seemed to be one of the better ones, and a local guy. Sorry to hear this.

Jay was old school. They don't make them like that anymore. He spoke God's honest truth with no filter. To the guy who said he hated NOLA, that can't be further from the truth.
On his radio show he always told stories from trips down memory lane. He obviously loved his time growing up in the city and always compared the culture differences between NOLA and other parts of the country. Yes sometimes he was brutally honest about things in NOLA but don't let the facts hurt ya. He was like that with any topic.
Jay always struck me as a regular average Joe who happened to work his way into Hollywood and fame that suited him perfectly. Anymore and he probably would have gone crazy and flamed out early on. Any less and he would have become way too board with himself.
In a world of political correctness gone mad, Jay was always a welcome throwback. A straight shooter. He will be missed.

He was such a dick on his show. In a good way though.
I kinda stopped listening when Indie radio was disbanded and he, Pete Dominic, and Covino and Rich all went separate ways. I could listen to that channel all day and never change it off.
Darn funny though. He always had the most awesome inappropriate response to anything and had the quirkiest callers on Sirius.
