I remember reading Focus on the Family magazine a lot in the 90s because Dobson would break down modern music lyrics for parents asking about what their kids were listening to.
He basically trashed everything I liked. For some reason, I recall him liking the chorus to Chumbawamba's "Tubthumping", but then saying the song was about getting drunk, and the band were anarchists, so get rid of the CD.
That kind of morphed into the Plugged In platform that FOTF has today to review movies, music, and video games.

I grew up at peak FOTF in the Evangelical South.
James Dobson might as well have been President in my house. Plenty of FOTF stuff I didn't like at the time and don't love now, but it was a cultural force that probably slowed the tide. He has some very good, albeit dated, material on raising children, boys especially.
same... my mom has probably given me damn near every book he's ever written, in hopes that it would, i dunno, spring me back into church and shite...
him and Charles Stanley i at least have respect for b/c they weren't sheisty fricks trying to milk every nickel out of people's grandmaws...

The things I learned from him that were the most helpful were to give my husband 30-60 minutes to wind down when he got home from work before talking to him about stuff, and saving my long winded conversations for close girlfriends while getting to the point quickly when I did talk to him.
Never really paid attention to the guy. Might be time to change that.

I have legitimately never heard of this guy.
That’s actually amazing

Only time I listened to him was as a young adult because my idiot cousin wanted play his show to pass the time around the campfire when we went camping.
I didn't get it and thought what he had to say was boooring AF and a bit silly.
fast forward 20 years and my cousin is living the dream and has 4 great kids and a wife who genuinely loves being a homemaker. I've been divorced twice.

Talked to him on the phone once when I was on the radio back in the late 90s and early 00s. Seemed like a genuine good man who believed strongly in the Christ. He's in a better place now.

I never heard of him
Can someone provide insight regarding this guy?
He was a follower of Jesus of Nazareth in the Evangelical tradition (Nazarene to be more precise). He started Focus on the Family (in the early 80s I think) in southern CA and relocated it to Colorado Springs.
He was an unapologetic proponent of the nuclear family. Staunch pro-life advocate. Knew you couldn't plug an electrical plug into another electrical plug.
Although he was of the Nazarene view, pretty sure prominent Baptists Adrian Rogers and Al Mohler both served on the FOTF board at times.
Can hardly say too much good about him. Warrior for Jesus, truth, and light. He chose sides. That's probably why so many hate him so much.

Dobson was a Southern Baptist. He knew that Catholics were posers. One of the things that I respected him for.

Absolutely. It was always explained and followed by love.

I’m laughing, this guy is hilarious. I hope he’s just joking, though.

Bundy told him what he wanted to hear, that it was all because of exposure to pornography.

A lone voice for many years pushing back against the attacks on traditional family values. He will be greatly missed.
People can criticizes his message but he was railing against things we would consider modern day culturally ills 30+ years ago.
RIP saint. Tell MacArthur, Keller, and Sproul hi.

but all I know it that much hate and bad mouthing doesn't come from Jesus or any scripture I've ever heard of.
Can you give a link of example showing they hated Romanist-Papists? I can understand hating the apostate cult, but not its members. They need the Gospel and love.

And I'm sure Catholics never say bad about Protestants?
In decades of going to Catholic Mass, I’m not sure I’ve ever heard a priest specifically call out another denomination in a critical or derogatory way. Eta: Same thing applies to 13 years of Catholic education.

so tony perkins? what a great guy

Tony is not a great guy, he is a good fundraiser for his organization.
As campaign manager for Woody Jenkins, he blew a big lead on Mary Landrieu so she became a senator.
