Kip came and spoke to us at Boys State in summer of 99. He seemed like a great dude. RIP to a good, old school, democrat.

After Katrina he did his best to keep the lawlessness and lawless fleeing New Orleans from affecting BR.
He held a press conference during the N.O. Katrina invasion of Baton Rouge and actually referred to the ones coming into Baton Rouge hell-bent on committing crimes as "thugs."

Imagine a black mayor calling black persons "thugs" today on TV.

Kip was a good man.

Looks like Gustavo Fring from Breaking Bad.

I gave him a hug as a middle schooler when he visited our schools cafeteria during lunch. Also, served him at the bar at Burgersmith on Perkins when I was in college.

I really liked Kip Holden.

Hell, even my old man liked Kip Holden, and for my old man to say that about a black mayor that's really something.

Had a mutual friend of Kip's before he was mayor. He used to show up at crawfish and crab boils with his posse. He was always nice but ran with a ghetto group of dudes. They'd always take all the leftovers home.

Met him on a Saturday morning at Bergerons on the west side. Couldn't have been more polite and upbeat. Tremendous first impression. Just a genuinely nice person, IMO.

I attended a LSU graduation that he spoke at. He was the only thing that kept me from falling asleep through the ceremony.

My younger self (highly idealistic) listened to every word he had to say. Not sure I would give that kind of attention to many politicians these days.

That and the fact that he was Mayor of one of the most racially segregated larger cities in the South, and I have no conscious memory of him ever invoking the Race Card on any issue except for perhaps in the early days of "ST George".

Way back when when he was a State Senator, he came unto the clothing store I was working at while in college to buy some suits. Great personality. Very friendly and not at all aloof. Happily voted for him for Mayor.

Yeah, that sounds right. Funny enough, he was friends and room neighbors with my grandfather who had severe dementia while they were in the assisted living last year and they'd often eat at the same table together.

Kip was in rough shape, but still had plenty of energy for someone with his disease, and was always talking about his next big election or speaking engagement that he had later that evening (obviously not the case). Still was super personable and had the fire even when his body was failing him.

My Kip story. I was helping my brother with a crawfish gig for an engineering firm downtown. Long story short, we boiled about 500lbs and dumped the water in a drain. Low and behold, I see a man approaching and it was Mayor Holden. He simply said, "At least its not motor oil" and went on his way. Minutes later he came out the building where the party was, and asked if there was any beer left. Talked to us for about 45 minutes. Nice guy. Did alot for the city. RIP

Indeed. But what if Kip Holden dressed as the grim reaper attends his own funeral?
