Bobby Bowden, led Florida State football dynasty, dies at 91

quote:

Bobby Bowden, the folksy Hall of Fame coach who built Florida State into an unprecedented college football dynasty, has died. He was 91.

Bobby's son, Terry, confirmed to The Associated Press that his father died at home in Tallahassee, Florida, surrounded by family early Sunday morning.

“It was truly peaceful,” Terry Bowden said in a text message to AP.

Bobby Bowden announced on July 21 he had a terminal illness that Terry Bowden later said was pancreatic cancer.

“I’ve always tried to serve God’s purpose for my life, on and off the field, and I am prepared for what is to come,” Bowden, a devout Christian, said at the time. “My wife, Ann, and our family have been life’s greatest blessing. I am at peace.”

Unprecedented? He won two national championships! I get that it is a eulogy, but for goodness sake, keep it real.

You must not remember the 80s'/90s. FSU was dominate. 90s had double digit wins every year.

EDIT: You ticked me off so bad I had to look it up. Top 5 finishes from 1987-2000. That man was a LEGEND.

Bowden retired following the 2009 season with a Gator Bowl win over West Virginia in Florida State’s 28th straight postseason appearance, a victory that gave him his 33rd consecutive winning season
quote:

With Southern charm and wit, Bowden piled up 377 wins during his 40 years as a major college coach, from tiny Samford — his alma mater, then known as Howard College — to West Virginia and finally at Florida State, where he went 315-98-4. The Seminoles were a force during his 34 seasons as coach, winning 12 Atlantic Coast Conference championships and national titles in 1993 and 1999.

Florida State had an unmatched run of 14 consecutive seasons (1987-2000) finishing ranked in the top five of The Associated Press college football poll under Bowden.

Used to love watching FSU. Saturday night games at Doak when their fans were doing the chop were always entertaining. Bowden was always a class act

Pretty bad take there guy. Bowden took over a FSU program that was pretty much nothing at the time and turned them into a consistent dominant program throughout the 80’s and 90's. He's among the best there ever was

Idiot alert.

-In 44 years as a head coach, he had a winning record in 40 of them.

-He had 1 losing season at FSU in 34 years as head coach, which was his first season.

-He built a college football empire from a little state school in Florida.

-He married his childhood sweetheart when he was 20 years old, they have been married for 72 years. He has 6 kids, and 20+ grandkids.

Bobby Bowden is what we need more of right now. His personality, charisma, faith and values are hard to come by these days. RIP coach.

One of my favorite Bobby Bowden stories came from Terry when he was at Auburn.

Said he was in home recruiting a 5* kid and it was great…. Kid is practically locked up for him at AU.

As he goes to leave, a limo pulls up out front and out steps his Dad, ah e him a nod and a smile, and proceeded into the kids house.

The kid signed with FSU.

Apparently Bobby found out the exact day and time of the scheduled in home visit (before Twitter and gps and all this shite) and knew his sons visits were pretty structured so he knew exactly how long to let Terry take his shot.

Ole man one upped him and Terry was pissed but could just laugh about it.

In a basketball conference while ducking the SEC expansion in 1990.

On August 3, Bobby Bowden admitted to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, “I like to win games, and I can’t think of a tougher place to do that than the SEC.” Under the proposed division alignment, Florida State would face Florida, Auburn and Alabama every year, which raised objections from FSU Athletic Director Bob Goin. “Most conferences have got two really strong programs,” Bowden continued, “but top to bottom there isn’t one close to the SEC.”
