To be honest, they probably took 2 hours or more between hits to assess damage, and started off with lighter stuff before using anything that might sink the ship.

At the 7:15 mark of this video, there's a hit from a sub. It's impressive from the force of the explosion and that the ship stayed upright after the hit.
