It’s pretty much just going to the nurses in the Covid units. They’re essentially locked up in that unit their entire shift. None of the rest of us are getting much if anything and we’re all perfectly fine with that. I honestly prefer this method to 5 nurses coming straight out of a Covid room standing next to me in the cafeteria. They deserve it and it helps keep the rest of us a bit safer.

30 years in EMS, probably been involved in 6/7 of “the big ones” where there is a showing of support. So between all the children being mangled up, or the severe spousal abuses, or the newborn cardiac arrest, or the endless hours, or the low pay, but on average of every 4/5 years it’s kinda nice to get recognized with a burger or pizza for all the mental trauma we deal with. I never feel like we deserve these things, and I don’t expect it because I chose this career knowing the baggage it came with, but I’d never knock the OP if he came out of pocket and fed the homeless vs bringing us a token of appreciation. But OP, I’d still take care of you and your family like they were my own.

The process it takes to donate would usually end up in the food spoiling.
The best way for this is to set up something before hand where you get underprivileged kids together. Like a community night. Which restaurants do every fricking week. Problem is, you can't do that in a stay at home order.
Your kind of thinking sucks. It's like rich people or athletes that get shite on for how much money they make. But there are plenty of them that do really great things and don't want the recognition because it's the right thing to do.

Several fast food places here in town are giving first responders and healthcare workers a flat 50% off. I would imagine that is getting FULLY exploited by those people.

Restaurants giving free meals to first responders has very little to do with showing gratitude. In actuality they are they are applying a very prevalent advertising tool known as charity marketing.
Giving free meals is much cheaper then an actual advertising campaign and is more effective because as word spreads it evokes a positive emotional response from the community. This in turn creates a loyal customer base and expands their brand.
