How do you not say yes sir or ma’am to people older than you?

Easy.

when someone asks you a question you just respond with yeah?

No, I respond with an answer to the question they ask.

Newsflash chief...it’s because they don’t fricking respect you. Much like everyone else in your miserable, pathetic excuse for a life

In a thread full of cringe comments made by the OP that one takes the cake

Keeping permanent formality with someone you frequently interact with is bizarre. I’m far more likely to say sir/ma’am to a summer law clerk I’m just getting to know than I am my boss who I’ve known almost a decade.

I don't stand at parade rest or call the room to attention when my boss enters, either.

My 1SG used to get pissed at me because I would sneak in to the company area all the time because I got annoyed when everyone called the area to attention when I entered through the front.

"Sir, you can't be doing that shite. You're giving them a complex"

I eventually gave in and started entering from the front area again.

Exactly once you relax the standards even just once discipline in your unit erodes.

We had an intern who was a former Air Force guy and he would address all emails with the intro “Sir,” or “Ma’am,” and couldn’t figure out that the tone of the email sounded condescending. No “Dear Jim” or “Good Afternoon Jennifer.” Just Sir and Ma’am.

You totally made this up. No one in the Air Force uses sir or ma'am.

One time, I answered a bus driver in Boston with a good natured "Yes sir!"

His response was, "If you call me sir again, I'm going to punch you where you pee."

After reading his posts I fully believe he was a second lieutenant. Whether he progressed beyond that is up for debate.

Well for starters it’s almost impossible barring misconduct to get out less than an O-3...

The most alpha move is to respond to your subordinates with yes/no sir

Why is this a alpha move? I do it just out of curiosity and habit.
