Federal workers are vested at 5 years. I worked 9 yrs federal service, about 1/4 of the OP. I get a whopping $256/mo federal pension. Retirement for federal workers is in the Thrifty Savings Plan, a 401K style account. At least for FERS employees. You don't retire on the pension.

Retired 2022 and have enjoyed every second. We don't RV but we do quite a bit of "let's go stay/see". Nothing that will break the bank and drain the funds but I have found out you can live off less than they expected if you did a decent job of planning ahead for retired living funds.

Well at 39 years you essentially still get paid close to 100% your salary, right? Work in something you like for 4 years and retire.

No he's under FERS. With the prior federal retirement system, Civil Service, after 42 years, you get 80% of your high three, which worked out to about the same as your salary, after taxes, retirement contributions, etc.

At 39 years under FERS, he'll get about a little less than 1/2 is salary, plus a social security of check of $2500ish/month and has a 7 figure TSP (unless he's a complete effing moron).

FERS started in 87, I believe. He’s probably CSRS.

I refer to CSRS as the "Golden Parachute." My boss is one of the last CSRS employees in my organization. I'd trade my pension, SS and 7 figure TSP for CSRS.

Correct, that’s why I wonder where the 100% retirement has come from.

Just to clear it up. I was active-duty Army for 24 years and Civil Service (FERS) for 15 years. Wasn't really ready to retire as I work with the EOD School. My retirement pays takes care of me financially but when the fork in the road appeared it made me have to decide what to do quickly. I really didn't expect this much response on here as I was just looking at other opinions. Been a member on Tiger Droppings 20 years this month and have always valued everyone's opinion.

Many people dancing in the street over the prospect of cutting down on the number of people standing between federal contractors robbing taxpayers have either not stopped to consider, or simply do not care, that about 40% of those people regulating and reeling in contractors are veterans and a GRACIOUS plenty of the money the US taxpayer spends goes to the military and veteran services. There are many other worthwhile endeavors being cut in the most ham-fisted bureaucratic method ever seen but the attack on veterans and veteran services is beyond the pall of decency....celebrating it is even more so....

I'm retiring under FERS on Friday with over 30 years civilian service. My monthly FERS pension from this won't even equal a two week pay period,

Since I'm also retired military with a VA disability, that pretty much takes me up to my salary with the addition of social security.

This took over 50 years and a lot of hard work and sacrifice.

I didn't elect the fork in the road as my retirement packet has been the mill for months and didn't want to screw anything up.

How is our country not taking care of them? Op has 24 years in the army plus 15 in civil service. So he’ll be getting VA healthcare, 50+% of his military pay, 15% of his civilian pay, social security, at that age.

Plus he hopefully saved for his retirement privately to some degree.

I very much appreciate the OP and all the veterans for their service. But many of these guys are by no means bad off. It’s a life change no doubt, but we could argue many of them being laid off may not have ever had a job in the first place due overspending.

Congrats, my man! Today is a day that you will remember for the rest of your life.

I recently retired on the day I turned 59 1/2 and have thoroughly enjoyed it.

Again, congrats on your retirement!
