Not sure exactly what skills ur referring to , but ive been in the white collar business world for the last 15 yrs or so and every single time ive seen someone let go, they are either fired, effective immediately or layoffs are announced, effective immediately.

He’s saying they are paid for at least two weeks. And he’s right. That’s kind of standard practice when people aren’t fired for cause.

Since graduating college I’ve never seen someone get laid off without being paid for at least two weeks plus their remaining PTO.

Jiminy Cripes, why arent you retried ?? By the time im ur age i will have been retired (traveling, volunteering, fricking off) for at least 2 decades.

Carter was President in 1979.

You need to learn some math. Odds of you retiring in your 40s is pretty low.

Anyone else think it’s strange that we, as employees, are always expected to give two weeks notice .. but it’s acceptable for an employer to just let you go without any notice? Or is it no big deal because ‘that’s the way it is’ ?

I mean, depends on the employer.
Where I work now, it’s extremely difficult to get laid off or to get someone fired. If you get fired, you know it’s coming

I went through this back in November. My boss and I had a decent relationship and he was blindsided by it. I felt bad for a few minutes, but got over that pretty quickly. It definitely changed our dynamic and I haven’t spoken to him since. I cut my 2 weeks notice short by 3 days when he refused to lay out my PTO balance.

The days of an employee being loyal to his employer by giving 2 weeks notice are long gone. I told both my boys, as they were entering the work force post college, to always do your job, never slack off, but nothing , anymore, is owed to the employer. I've seen too many friends, over the years, walked out the door with no notice, more than a few being led out by security, embarrassed to tears at times. Any future employers, if this comes up, can be given a reasonable reason for leaving with no 2 weeks notice. Most HR's today know this is the world we live in now.

I don't believe it is the norm to fire someone for poor performance without them knowing it's likely to come. It's really fricking hard to fire someone who is showing up and not breaking the law or breaking any critical policies. At least in my field, it's much more likely the person finds another job before the termination process can be completed, often times at the company's urging or at least with full support. Again, excluding severe situations that require immediate action.

On the flip side, notice is customary and nice, but there's nothing except a burned bridge stopping anyone from leaving at any moment. And as has been mentioned, often times the employee isn't required to complete the notice period, unless they have a critical role that can't be easily picked up by someone else.

She just got a snack from her drawer, and then slammed it. Handling it very well still.

She just knows she won't be able to come in 15-20 minutes late anymore, leave 10 minutes early, and stay on her phone most of the day now. She also knows I'm 10x better than my coworkers. Next Friday at 4:30 PM cannot come fast enough.

this does suck.

i've also come to find that as a business owner you have to hire people who would be committed to the culture, more so than driven by the bottom line.
i've passed on some good people because i knew they were fishing for money and would do it to me too.

if you hire right and treat your employees properly then you don't ever have to deal with someone giving you an awkward two week notice, or wanting to help others train, etc

She is just treating me like I am invisible at this point. I am willing to do anything but have not been asked anything. I am even willing to help out when I am gone and answer anything I can via text.

That is all I will say when I leave next Friday. Have a good weekend and text me if you end up needing any guidance.

So what are you actually doing with your remaining time there? Just dicking off on the internet and watching the clock go by slowly? That would be pretty miserable

eh, the two weeks period is fun for me. 2 weeks of IDGAF.

Worked with a guy who turned in his notice. For the entire day, whenever someone would call him to ask for something he would replay. No, I don't feel like doing that today.

I am actually getting a LOT done. I have come in early some days, left late others. Tying up loose ends, saving important email conversations that the whole team may need when I'm gone, etc. I also have a deadline of the 17th for a project due, but my last day is the 13th. So I am doing everything I can to make sure it is submitted that day before I leave so it's not dumped on someone else to work on for literally two days and having to figure out what is going on with it. I am occasionally posting on the tRant.

I could never do that, but so wish I could in this situation. Wish I could give it back how she is giving it to me... technically I kind of am by just sitting here quietly doing my work (because normally I'd occasionally go into her office to shoot the shite too). I am just giving back what she is giving me, nothing. I at least say goodnight when I leave for the day (two of the three have been ignored and one of them you could tell was the most begrudgingly quiet goodnight back ever).

But also, .

She'd be sending you the 1099 in that case. What you'd send is an invoice.

PTO is accrued time so you're either a liar or an idiot.

Well you're definitely an idiot, just not sure about this specific circumstance

You need to put on a sombrero and loudly wish her a happy Cinco de Mayo and say toodles to her before leaving for the day today. She'd probably break character and try to smash a bottle over your head.
