I'm a flat out Excel Ninja that everyone in my organization comes to.....even those outside my department. And every damned thing I know I learned on YouTube or, learned by knocking around in Excel after getting the basics on YouTube.
And yeah, it's helped me do myriad things in my house.

so basically, they are using the words "don't know" for "never have"
There is absolutely no way 1 in 5 22 year olds can't operate a dish washer or washing machine

when I was dating my wife, I took her to her first crawfish boil and before we left I got on her computer for a sec to look something up and in her Google search bar was "how to eat crawfish"

Exactly its called being resourceful. I hate when old folk say stuff about how we wouldn't know what to do without technology.
Part of what stuns me about the younger folks in the workplace today is that they've spent their entire lives connected yet, when confronted with something they don't immediately know how to do.........they consider "I don't know" to be the end of the conversation.
I'm like......"frick man..........when I was 25, if I needed to know, I had to go buy a book.........you frickers can watch 50 different people explain it to you for free on the internet..........cmon!!!"

Definitely applies to 22yr old women.

I'm surprised 2/3 know how to cook a roast chicken dinner. I'm 35 & have only done that once in my life.
I'd google how to do it.
Ya I don't "know" how to make a ton of stuff. I just look at the box or google a recipe and I'm cooking it a few hours later.
I don't need all that in my head.

one in three have no idea how to cook a roast chicken dinner
— one in five don’t know how to use a washing machine
— one in five don’t know how to use a dishwasher
— one in five don’t know how to clean an oven
— more than one in ten don’t know how to change a bag on a vacuum cleaner
— and more than one in ten don’t know how to register to vote
Not sure why this surprises you. 100% of OT wives don't know how to do any of this either.

It kinda baffles me really. I mean, shouldn't it really be the case that young people at work get frustrated with the old farts who are technologically behind?

And, you can consult multiple sources on the same topic within minutes vs. having one person teach you to do something that may or may not be the best or safest or most efficient way of doing it.

Yep. As an old fart, I'm a fan of the internet for learning.
Then again. I'm that guy. I hate not knowing shite. I tell people all the time, if I'm asking you how, it's because I've exhausted every avenue to figure it out myself first.
The net makes that easier.

On a serious note, it is worse now if you don't know something. That usually means you're lazy (or haven't needed to know it yet I guess) because everything is at your fingertips. I legitimately watched youtube videos for 2 hours this morning to figure out how to do something for a big project at work. The internet makes you more qualified to do your job

Absofrickinglutely.
When someone at work tells me they "don't know how" to do something that one can literally learn in 10 minutes with a bit of help from the internet..........my only thought is, "damn, this fricker's useless".

Amen to that
Companies that block internet access have no idea how much productivity they are probably blocking. They should really consider other ways to prevent their employees slacking on the job.

In my experience, it is usually the case that the old farts are behind and especially uninterested in learning newer, more efficient ways of doing things. They perceive their way as the correct way and can't understand why others don't feel the same.
Public schools really ought to devote more class time to teaching kids how to use a search engine and evaluate the validity/quality of search results.
Posted on 6/17/16 at 1:22 pm to tke857
According to those stats it looks like 80 to 90% of those kids do know how to do those things.
