That makes sense.. I figured it was something like that. Piss poor planning..

It wasn’t to save money I can assure you that. Shell and Noble have plenty of rigs and drill ships under their watch in the GOM and got every one but this one out of harms way so they could “save money”? bullshite. Somebody planned really poorly and got caught w their pants down.

Wait, the article said Noble Corporation and Shell said they were coming to evacuate them. If they were going to be evacuated, why would this be on the captain?

They say the companies who were supposed to evacuate them before the storm hit never did.
They say Noble Corporation and Shell were supposed to evacuate them. They never did.
Another crew member on board the Noble Globetrotter II drill ship tells News Ten he believes people were left aboard the vessel and left in harms way for no other reason than the expense of removing them and bringing them back once operations were ready to continue.

Some lawyer in south Louisiana just ordered a Gulfstream jet for his next birthday.

Really no excuse for this with modern communications, helicopters, GPS, and radar.
Really no excuse for them not to disconnect and get to safer harbor. I mean they're a ship, not stationary..
Well from the article, only if you bothered to read it, you'd know that they tried but then realized it was too late by the time they realized they were not getting evacuated.
So, they believed or they were told that someone was coming to get them BUT when shite started to get bad they were then told, sorry guys, no ones coming to get you, so ride it out.
How fast can a drill ship move in normal conditions? What about in 15-20' seas as the storms approaching? (I know they got worse than that) How fast was IDA moving while in the gulf? I've read IDA was moving 26mph when entered GOM and 15-17MPH while in the GOM. So, the drill ship would have needed to be able to run at min 13.1kts to 14.8kts just to keep pace with storm. Is that possible?

Got damn I thought the 3 things that never run out in O&G is Grizz, Marlboros, and Dawn.
ETA: On a more serious note 100 people? Someone would have had to stay on the ship right? So lets say 10 is skeleton crew or something, getting 90 people off would take a lot of trips on a helicopter right? That seems like it would be a damn full day of evacuation for a helicopter or more? I can understand 20 people being left, but 100?

They didn’t have to beat the storm to the beach. All they had to do was go west by 50-100 miles and they would’ve been fine.

Either they get out the way and keep full staff or evacuate completely. There’s no “skeleton crew” plans if you’re hitting a storm head on. In ANY situation

Drill ships can haul arse. But you can’t haul arse with 1000’ of riser connected to you.

Yeah, I don’t understand that either. Disconnect the riser and head west.

Activate the Cajun navy. Buncha center consoles need to go load those men up and bring 'em home.

Honest question, how much is that riser worth? Seems like they potentially risked 100 lives and an entire boat for it right? Would it not have made some sense to ditch the riser and haul arse without it?

Ok, how long does it take to disconnect the ship from the 1000' of riser? At what point with wind speed and waive height would it be too dangerous to try to disconnect?
If they thought they were getting evacuated up until the storm was 10hrs away would that have given them enough time to disconnect and run away from storm? What it they got the call that no one was coming say 6hrs before the storm was close enough that they were starting to feel tropical force winds ?
I get what you are saying .. what would be the timeframe needed to disconnect and get moving before it was just too late and it would be more dangerous to disconnect than to just ride it out?
