No idea Jim but that seems plausible to me.

Yes several of the camps had no campers
A number of them take the 4th of July week 2 weeks off

I can’t pretend to know what happened or what happened in the moment beyond what my daughter showed me from the counselor group text, but the warnings were not for some monstrous, never before seen flood. The Eastlands have lived on site for decades. I think they had a pretty good feel for river flood events.

Reading the TexAgs thread - there seems to be some accounts that water was coming from above Camp Mystic - not just rising from the river - maybe from other creeks. Don’t know the area so not sure if plausible or true. If true, I’m sure that wildly changes any dynamics on the ground.
There was one story coming from a kid’s parent about a counselor leading girls up the side of a hill to wait out the storm and then later helped the kids get across what was said by the kid to be a river but likely a creek to get to the cypress lake Camp, and I have thought the creek was the dry Edmunson creek that seems to mostly drain rain water from that valley going back a couple of miles. The hill they went up likely had rain run off coming down that wasn’t emptying on the Edmunson creek side from what I have read.
There is also Cypress Creek that runs thru the camp which has several ponds or small lakes made with weirs on camp and also on property on other side of the camp (forms Moore’s lakes or something like that on neighboring property) on top of being a drainage creek for valley longer than Edmunson and even seems to have another named dry creek that would empty into it along with the USGS showing multiple other drainage lines in smaller valleys that would also empty rain into Cypress creek before it gets into Camp Mystic. Any rain falling within several miles south and southeast of Mystic likely added a lot of water to cypress creek that was trying to drain into the flooding south fork of the Guadalupe river at the same time.
I don’t know if 1987 flood was getting it as bad from multiple sources & directions or exactly how those cabins lost on the 4th didn’t take on water in 1987 unless the levels during floods are measured from the river’s levels without the weirs instead of the level made by the weir right along the camp (using a topography map estimate the cabins taken in flood looked 22 to 23 feet above level of the water made by the weir but closer to at least 29 to maybe 32 feet above the level using river level right after the weir), but regardless I can still see them focusing on those other cabins first as they were both closer to river and lower by maybe 4 to 6 feet. It also doesn’t seem unreasonable for them to be greatly surprised by the speed and the levels of the flooding compared to prior years including possibly the floods in 1987 and thinking they had more time to get to the cabins of the girls who have died or are still missing.
Also those measurements are a big if as I was just quickly using the topography map at the USGS site which didn’t allow me to zoom in close on phone to see all the cabins clearly, so slight changes in starting and ending points made changes in feet not inches which is reason for ranges. I also don’t know how accurate the website is in the first place or when using their tools on a mobile phone and touch screen like I was doing.

This makes sense to me as well. Early July is usually swap out of counselors and campers.

Posted on 7/7/25 at 9:49 pm to T_don
I don't believe there have been any
I hope I'm wrong,, nothing would make me happier

Sure it’s already been posted but stories out about a Coastie crew that dropped a rescue swimmer into camp mystic and he stayed on ground and coordinated rescues so the helo could carry more kids out. It was his first mission. Came through the same storm from CAS Corpus.
You can say what you want about the Coast Guard, but their helo drivers are first class professionals that fly in some of the nastiest weather Mother Nature can put out.
The guy also had a baller job on Wall Street and quit to join the Coast Guard.

See that’s what I was worried about I’ve been keeping up a little bit on the board and I haven’t seen many post about survivors or anything…Jesus

Oh, there are plenty others. They had like a 20 mile radius no-fly zone on day 1. A day or so in they lifted it, but the drones got so bad that they had to reinstate a smaller one, and eventually enlarge it and add a flyway back to wherever most assets are stationed. It is a big problem.

That’s wonderful. Is there a link? ??
Never mind. I see it.

I’m absolutely no expert on hill country flash floods or the topography of their plot but with warnings days in advance of a possible event I’d expect some heightened awareness and possibly even a pre-emptive evacuation depending on the actual threat level and their ability to combat an emerging situation live in the moment.
This area gets flood warnings like south Louisiana gets severe thunderstorm warnings.
It’s clear that they were aware and that the night patrol would keep an eye on the conditions. You can even see the guard house sits right on the road adjacent to the river.
quote:
If they can’t provide safety quickly in the moment, they probably need to err on the side of caution. If they can provide that safety, they probably needed to keep a team on alert overnight during warnings.
They evacuated everyone to a level that was safe from the “historic” flood levels in 1987.

I doubt they were evil but they may have been overly careless.
Nothing seems careless from what’s been reported out of Mystic. Seems like everything was under control until the water got above the ‘87 level and then they had to improvise.

I'm very happy for the news and the down votes I'll get for this I accept but those weren't missing if the cop down the street was talking to them over a loudspeaker the whole time

Was that rescue today? Or is it just a report about an earlier rescue?
Nevermind i read all the way through I think it was from a day or 2 ago. The neighbor helped them off roof.
quote:
As water levels receded, a neighbor was able to get a ladder up to the roof, and the mother-daughter duo got down to safety.
Posted on 7/7/25 at 10:27 pm to dallastigers
Yeah I don't think those two were counted amongst the missing they were on the roof neighbors knew it the entire time when water receded they were rescued
Posted on 7/7/25 at 10:34 pm to idlewatcher
the news story was posted 5 or six hours ago that doesn't mean the events the event in the story took place five hours ago

My church does this thing every July 4th where they sing the military branch song and all the soilders of that branch stand up.
The 1 fella that stood for CG received a new found respect after this event from the congregation.
They don't do a lot of missions, but their job can be extremely dangerous
I know...Cool story bro
