And those missions are to help their fellow citizens on what is possibly the worst days of their lives. That's direct and tangible impact in situations that carry the weight of innocent trauma. The job they do is important, and their value isn't always recognized.

Abbott said there is an additional 161 that have been reported missing…and the number may grow

That's awful. Just keeps getting worse

Comparing the two situations is so incredibly disingenuous

Not to mention. The 10 campers that died in 1987 were in a bus that tried to outrun the flash flood and crossed an impassable road.

This camp was also further downriver with more warning time.

Even then we had the “turn around, don’t drown” slogans.

Turns out that the home is on the Blanco River which did not flood anywhere close to this.

NWS can predict flash floods all they want as far in advance as the can... this had nothing to do with them because there is no way they could have predicted water to get that high that quickly. Only now we know it is possible.

One possible outcome is the have a higher tier warning than "flash flood". I imagine many people are like me and when I hear flash flood I think of low water crossings being covered and inaccessible. I do not think of a flash river tsunami about to wipe out everything in minutes.

I would bet the local officials probably had the same thoughts. If they knew what was going to hit I have no doubt they would have been aggressive in getting word out to get people off the river bottom.

They did. They issued a flash flood warning that included threat to life at 1am

Edited for clarity

In an area where cell phone coverage is minimal at best.

The emergency was issued at 4:03am I believe.

Warnings were issued at 1am, and used language that considered the flooding potentially life-threatening.

Stand corrected. I got the 1am warning with the life-threatening language confused with the emergency alert.

You’re all good. I know there’s been all sorts of info about it so it’s tough to keep up.

Not sure how much it would have mattered since the counselors keep their phones locked in the office anyways during camp.

Maybe the Eastlands or the security guard would have started evacuations a little earlier, but hard to know for sure.

This is a good breakdown of the meteorology behind the flooding.

There was an interview with a survivor from down the river (not a camp person) who said they received the alerts but ignored it because they always receive alerts.

Alert fatigue is real - not sure what the answer is but a change in the entire alert system (not just weather related) is needed.

And this is a good geological breakdown of the landscape and why/how it is so flood-prone.

Yeah it's really easy to fall into the boy who Called wolf syndrome but then governments or the agencies that release these alerts are always erring on the side of caution But that creates a nonchalant attitude in the citizenry

but I can guarantee you for at least the next year or so that part of Texas will take the alerts seriously

I've had four friends of friends have received the news that the bodies have been found all under 12 years of age

It's not the news that anyone wants to hear
I hope it's the beginning of some sort of peace for the families

It still irritates me that there were people here posting as if it were a fact that no more bodies would be found
or that there had been rescues when there had not been any
or that missing people had been found

false hope,, destroys hope

I honestly don’t think it would have mattered. It appears that they got all the cabins that were in area impacted by the ‘87 flood evacuated. Then the water kept rising.
