I remember the Albert Pike Flood at an Arkansas campground that killed some children back in 2010.

I know someone who lost a child in that flood.,

Caught one of the Austin news stations and they had video of some reporter asking a judge why they didn't evacuate the camps since they knew it was going to flood. Seems like a low question. I would have turned it around and asked who actually knew this. We've been in Fredericksburg for vacay and had no idea it'd be like this. We knew it'd rain but it's been nonstop since yesterday at 9. I'm also from Kerrville and don't recall anything even close to this. I was 4 in 87 so I don't remember that one. We're used to blazing hot summers and droughts during the summer, not floods.

Well then, you know that the Hill Country has several different watersheds, and depending upon where the downpour comes from, that can be where the IT happens
And it happens fast
Back in the 90s I got caught at Dripping Springs the actual Spring for about eight hours
the family homestead was less than a mile away, but the roads were impassable due to the downpour

With all respect, that’s 40 years of weather.
Point being, natural tragedies like this happen. It really really sucks, but living in fear is not freedom. Preparation can only go far.
Sorry to all having to deal with this.

No forecasting could have given some warning? I know nothing about flash floods like that.
I posted this over on the PT thread to a similar question:
quote:
2-3"/hr rainfall rates over an extended period of time. That rain fell in an area in the midst of an extended severe drought. Runoff was rapid due to the hard packed soil. Getting heavy rain on severely drought-stricken ground is always bad news. Soil isn't able to absorb the rain efficiently enough and runoff becomes a considerable issue.
This wasn't badly forecast. Mid-range forecasts called for the potential of localized areas seeing 10"+ of rain. There just wasn't high confidence on where that heaviest rain would set up.
This was caused by the remnants of tropical storm Barry interacting with a shortwave trough working it's way through the region. That trough was slow moving, and the flow from it was directly off the Gulf, pumping moisture into the system. Unfortunately, the heaviest rains fell over one of the worst possible places in the region.
Happening at night didn't help. There weren't as many eyes on the rapidly rising water, as most people were asleep. This really was one of the nightmare scenarios.

That area gets dangerous with heavy water. Had my son at a father/son camp one year when it stormed. We had to evacuate everyone and force them to leave their tents and everything else behind. We got everyone to high ground but the tent area was completely flooded and swept away.

my heart breaks for what these children had to endure even with the joy at their survival

Holy crap. Dude, I'd be completely dysfunctional, not being able to get to them. I know I'll get shite on for this, but I think there's some primal thing that kicks in when a guy sees a little girl in distress. Those poor little girls.

I understand ,, just looking at that pic I feel helpless and they aren't my children

There’s a thread on the Aggie Outdoor board. A few posters in there had kids at Mystic. One posted he didn’t know where his daughter was. An hour or so ago he posted a picture of his daughter with his wife after they found her. The look on his wife’s face brought tears to my eyes. It was a mixture of joy/relief along with a mix of the absolute hell they’ve been through the last 12 hours.
A second poster has a niece there. He posted her first name and another poster apparently heard from a neighbor that she was found with the neighbor’s kid further in the thread. He literally found out she was alive from the board. Everyone is just waiting on confirmation that it’s true and her.

I would. I couldn't live with those kids not making it. Hell, I'm tearing up now and want to vomit. I can't imagine. Don't want to. Wish I never clicked into this thread. God be with all of them.
