From Jeff Landry's FB

Emma Foltz, of Alexandria, Louisiana and rising senior at Louisiana Tech has been a camp counselor at Camp Mystic in Texas for three years.

She played an instrumental role in helping evacuate 14 of her campers to safety. Please join me in thanking Emma for all her hard work and bravery under immense pressure.

We continue to pray for all those affected by this travesty. Louisiana is here to help!

I tried all day to find someone to let me go and failed. (Blah woe is me) I’m sure whatever they find will be the most awful thing in the world. Good luck to them, I wished I could join

Kerrville people are my people and I want to do something beyond a damn Salvation Army donation

I’m mostly waiting to see what all my Mystic friends say as far as ways I can help, and then I’ll go from there.

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen people hurting as bad in close community as I am right now. It sucks so much.

Heart O’ The Hills, a girls camp just down the river from Camp Mystic, was thankfully out of session. However, Jane Ragsdale, the longtime co-owner and director of Heart O' The Hills, died in the floods.

This is where my daughter goes. She’s been going for 6 years now. My wife was a counselor in college.

They are pretty broken up about it.

It’s just different when kids die. Not to mitigate the deaths of the adults around, as they fought like hell to save the kids, but there’s something about the innocence of a child that makes it worse. These girls went to a summer camp eager to make lasting friendships and memories.

The little cabin picture with all the girls is heartbreaking. One day, they are having the best week of their young lives and the next gone. Many of the pics of these girls are from the Mystic photos leading up to yesterday.

From the pics shared above the lower part of the camp seems to be on the point bar side of a river bend AND near the confluence of the Guad and maybe another creek or wash that runs into it. Really tough area that is going to experience some flooding because of its topography

Agree. That is a bad spot regardless of history.

I’m so sorry. This hits hard for people who don’t know anyone, but knowing someone has to be a stab.

Just saw this on X. A little girl from Alabama is one of the victims… only 8 years old.

The Camp Mystic cabins that were affected were those that housed the youngest campers All these kids were most likely going to their very first summer camp away from home

it's absolutely heartbreaking

That thread contained some info that confirmed my suspicion here. The lower cabins were caught in a swirl of the south fork of the Guad and a side creek.

Yep. The flood wall had a lot of debris with it, seen in several videos of the beginning of the flash flooding. It slowed in that bend naturally, even more so with the debris, and the water behind the wall rose quickly. It matches the story and timing of the owner's (I think) truck being swept away as they were trying to evacuate the last of the girls. Also, there are the accounts of a pile of vehicles that were deposited in that area.

In tbe coming days someone will map the progression of this flood, and we will see for sure how it transpired.

Harvey took 51 lives and the incident which resulted in the most deaths was a grandfather trying to transport I think his wife and eight grandchildren over a bridge in floodwaters had they stayed they would have most likely survived That's one of the things about these flash floods these are never sure to stay or to try to flee

Obviously staying was not an option and time just caught up with them

What really tears me up about this story is how scared those little girls had to be. They’re still just babies at that age. Totally innocent. No idea what’s going on or what to do. Just scared and wanting their mom and dad. I don’t even have the words. All you can say is what you’ve said, it’s absolutely heartbreaking.
