BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Retired military leaders are going to release a new report that shows 75 percent of the state's young adults are unable to join the military because they are too uneducated, too overweight and have a record of crime or drug abuse.

Major General Ron Richard, U.S. Marine Corps, (Retired); Rear Admiral David Callahan, U.S. Coast Guard, (Retired); and Brigadier General Gary Jones, U.S. Army, (Retired); will join local lawmakers for a press conference at the State Capitol on Thursday, March 1 at 10 a.m.

It's not a charity fat camp or a reform school.

About 10 years ago, HBO did a documentary about military recruitment from a high school in Houma. It was depressing. I think it followed 3 kids and two of them did well...one a regular guy and one who went on to Ranger school. But there was one that went AWOL from basic or something like that and knowing the area, more people are like the last example than the other two.

Don’t worry military.

The cost of college tuition is rising at an absurd rate.

If tops isn’t around when my kids graduate and they don’t qualify for other scholarships you’ll be getting 3 healthy lads.

That really shows you what a low opinion of the military the members of this board hold. Too many of daddy’s money frat stars. I joined with a 92 on the asvab.

I agree that’s not the intent, but all the people I know that joined the military were frick ups or too stupid to get into college. Mostly marines.

Note: this doesn’t include two guys i know that went to West Point and Naval Academy, respectively.

The other 49 states should expel LA from the Union. Give it back to France.

I certainly don’t have a low opinion of it or the members. I just know the dozen or so guys who went that route were basically out of options.

Almost all of them have done well for themselves and I’ve got to think the military helped them tremendously.

Major General Ron Richard, U.S. Marine Corps,

Got to speak to him after I graduated boot camp. We were tailgating before an LSU game on my 10-day leave in between boot camp and School of Infantry, my grandfather knew MajGen. Richard from TAF, saw him walking on the other side of S. Stadium Dr. and yelled out "HEY GEN. RICHARD COME SAY HELLO TO MY MARINE"

It was more than a little embarrassing but it was a neat experience, he was the base commander at Parris Island for some of his career.

I want you to take a trip with me 20 years into the future and tell me what you see. It’s frightening.

I'm sure those numbers are higher than the past, but it's worth noting that they said similar things during the WWI & II draft and that during Vietnam they were really dragging the bottom of the barrel. Private Pyle wasn't just a figment of Kubrick's imagination.
