Everyone harps in recycling but they ignore the first three principles of the recycling triangle:
Reduce
Reuse

These two are FAR more impactful than recycling, but they don’t come with virtue signaling and connected persons can’t make money off of it through their sweet government contracts.

But how can we stop deforestation? As long as the populations trends upward, we will need the space.

Most of the deforestation in the Amazon was to clear land for farming for the purpose of ethanol production. Cars in Brazil use alcohol for fuel, not petroleum.

That's about as stupid as giving massive taxpayer subsidies to farmers to grow corn for ethanol instead of actual food.

Thankfully we'd never do something dumb like that in this country.

I have observed the fact that most people from California are goofier than most, education notwithstanding.

I agree with you about preventing plastic waste build ups. It’s a tragedy the amount of trash that is in the ocean. But how can we stop deforestation? As long as the populations trends upward, we will need the space.

Deforestation is not done for space for population to live 99.99% of the time. It is done to harvest the trees (paper, palm oil, lumber, etc.) or for farm land.

ETA:

And the farm land, as pointed out above, is not to feed the population really.

Not a shocker: humans are the worst thing to happen to this planet.

Some reports (from findings through deforestation) are now saying that much of the Amazon is man made and at one time had millions of people living in that area.

Humans are having an impact of the environment, but not nearly as much as we're led to believe.

The most remarkable info to come out of this is that we've been tracking global biomass since prehistory. It is just awesome that, since we've been able to write, we've had somebody responsible for traveling the planet and accurately adding up biomass. Awesome, and absolutely believable.

I know right? It's like they think they can use science to figure out things that have happened in the past. Everybody knows you got to see it with your own eyes or else ain't true. You feel me, baws?

Humans have altered the Sahara desert VERY LITTLE and yet … life struggles to survive there

Seems like man actually benefits the areas that he impacts

Please link me those reports.

That seems ridiculous.

"[One] million species already face extinction, many within decades, unless action is taken to reduce the intensity of drivers of biodiversity loss

This looks like a staggering number, but think of all of the unknown species that have gone extinct long before us.

quote:

82% of mammal biomass: It's not just the number of species that's crashing -- it's the total amount of creatures, too. One way to measure this is by mass. The global biomass of wild mammals has declined by 82% since prehistory.

This should not be at all surprising to anyone with a basic understanding of ecology. As human population increases one would expect the population of other species to decrease.

Is there a point to these studies? We already know that a growing human population will have an impact on the planet. This should not be surprising to anyone. These studies generally have an undertone that suggests that humans should act against their better interest as some kind of custodians of the planet.

We are by far the most intelligent species on the planet, but we are still naturally predisposed to act in our own best interest.
