Perhaps you've read the very latest from a UN-affiliated group, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, or IPBES, which released on Monday a sweeping and damning report on global biodiversity. None of the themes in the report are new -- we've long known we're screwing up the natural world, which also is the human world -- but the report's findings remain alarming and profound. Especially these three figures:

Three-quarters of the land: 75% of the planet's land surface has been "significantly altered." Three. Quarters. Relatedly, biodiversity "is declining faster than at any time in human history."

1 million species: "[One] million species already face extinction, many within decades, unless action is taken to reduce the intensity of drivers of biodiversity loss

82% of mammal biomass: It's not just the number of species that's crashing -- it's the total amount of creatures, too. One way to measure this is by mass. The global biomass of wild mammals has declined by 82% since prehistory.

Do you believe these reports to be legit? Or are they being overblown? What should the OT do about this?

Well I don't think it's any big revelation that we're really fricking up the planet so I guess it depends on your definition of "overblown".

I mean, if you have a nice looking St. Aug lawn, you're "really screwing up the natural world"

So yes

Except it actually is fake. They cherrypick misleading facts to paint a narrative.

This is true regardless of education level or profession.

De-forestation and plastic waste piling up are two things that I think we can really prevent if humanity cared enough.

99.9% of people (I’m not talking about scientists, I’m talking about average people on forums and Facebook) who weigh in on climate change have absolutely no fricking idea what they’re talking about and just support whatever their party believes (Democrat=it’s real, Republican=it’s fake).

Just come out and say it, yes its time we start culling the herd. Some will have to be sacrificed for the greater good. We should start with the welfare recipients first.

So let’s stop the deforestation. That starts in the Congo and in the Amazon

Yeah, would be great if those piece of shite countries would stop ruining the world.

And Palm Oil in Asia. Unbelievable what they've done to the environment.

The plastic waste comes from Asia and South America too. Like I said, if humanity cared enough we could really limit both deforestation and plastic waste.

Sadly, countries beyond our control don't give a shite.

People are bad. Must self exterminate.
Maybe that Shyamalan film was wishful thinking on his part??
