Replicas of Christopher Columbus' Pinta and Nina are headed to Biloxi, Mississippi, but first, they'll be making a stop in Baton Rouge.
The Nina was built by hand without the use of power tools. Archaeology magazine calls the ship "the most historically correct Columbus replica ever built." In 2005, the Pinta was launched in Brazil. It is also a caravel, which is a small, maneuverable ship developed in the 15th century by the Portugese.
Kind of crazy considering how small they are. Half the OT has ski boats larger than these two.

The Niña is a replica of the ship on which Columbus sailed across the Atlantic on his three voyages of discovery to the new world beginning in 1492. Columbus sailed the tiny ship over 25,000 miles. That ship was last heard of in 1501, but the new Niña has a different mission. We are a floating museum, and we visit ports all over the Western Hemisphere.
Takes guts to sail boats that size into the unknown.

There is a replica in Spain.
Would be cool to see. That one would have a 62' hull instead of a 50' hull.

I remember a replica of one of Columbus's ships in BR when I was a kid, and this was my first thought. It was docked right next to the USS Kidd and it was completely dwarfed by the Kidd. It was basically the size of the tugboats out pushing the barges.
Also, according to that link, they were in Baton Rouge yesterday.

Who cares about two boats that failed to make it to the New World. What's next, a Lockheed Model 10 Electra replica?

The ships will dock in Baton Rouge on Monday, December 11. They are expected to arrive in Biloxi on Friday, December 15.

They stopped in Chattanooga a year or so ago, they are pretty neat to see.

Neither the Link nor the website states how long they will be in town? Do you have any idea?

Looks like they docked around 3:30 yesterday afternoon and are leaving today. The video seems to say that you can only tour them when they get to Biloxi.
Unfortunately there is not much other info about it.

I have pictures on that boat at my house. I was about 14. This was 89 or so? Or are you that much younger than me?
It was surprisingly small in real life.

I actually have trouble imagining what it must have been like to cross the Pacific and go to battle in the USS Kidd and several other smaller destroyers.
Crossing the Atlantic without a real understanding of where you were headed in that little wooden toy just baffles me.

If these are the same ones I got to see a few years ago, not only are they surprisingly small, there isn't much too them either. Pretty open deck plan. You think of those ships as having some room towards the back where the captain has all his maps laid out and stuff, but the ones I went on basically just had a covered area, but not enclosed.

Saw them in Biloxi years ago. Go see them. Walking around on those boats, the only thing I could think was, “No fricking way.”

They look appropriate for False River. Not the Atlantic.

Seeing those old ships (even though these are replicas) is pretty cool. Every so often, they'll sail the USS Constitution on the river and it's always impressive to see.
