Replacing smoke detectors every ten years

Seems like a money grab to me. I just replaced twenty year old detectors and the guy at Home Depot went into a whole scpheel about how they NEEDED to be replaced every ten years due to sensors wearing out. These detectors will be sold with the house in 15-20 years. How often do y’all switch out your smoke detectors?

I just change batteries every new year.

Only when they fail to report a fire to me while in a heavy sleep.

so you're going to risk insurance coverage payout or a potential house fire because you want to save a few bucks on buying $30 smoke detectors every 10 years?
CAD is cheap but he makes sure the fire extinguishers and smoke detectors are all in working order.

I've heard this for carbon monoxide detectors, not smoke.
EDIT: Google tells me smoke detectors have lifespan of about 10 years.

If you've gone that long without your house burning down you probably don't need one

If his homeowners insurance company would deny coverage after a fire simply because he didn't have a smoke alarm, he needs to switch companies YESTERDAY.

I never think about it, I have 4 in my current house that often go off when cooking. I'd appreciate them if needed, but I dont think they're all going out at once.

I got some of the 10 year life ones during our flood remodel
One of them started chirping every few minutes last week, a little over 2 years

I replaced some that were about 11 years old. It wasn't just the low battery chirp. It was a full on false alarm for a few seconds. That really gets the blood flowing at 3:30am! If yours are tripping and they're not that old, make sure they're clean. Dust, dirt and even dead bugs can cause a false alarm for the sensor.

Probably needs battery replaced. Mine are hardwired but will chirp if back up battery is running low

When a smoke detector stops making that beeping sound, that means it's broken in and ready for a lifetime of worry-free service.

The sensors like all solid state electronic devices will degrade with time and gradually lose their ability to detect smoke or fire.
I wouldn't trust my wife and kids lives to a piece of $30 electronics I bought ten years ago.
Cheap insurance.

Smoke detectors? Finally! That's what those little white things are on the ceiling that beep all the time. Thx!

I just replaced all of mine: Two with CO and smoke, which were $25 each, and the other 5 with just smoke detectors which were <$10 each.
Changing them out took about 5 minutes for the first 2 and then about 2 minutes each for the next 5.
Just do it!

First off, this is all a liability thing for the manufacturer so if they don't work after 10 years they are good. Its not like day 3650 they go bad, they couldn't make them for 4000 days?
Most importantly, where is this $30 from? More like $30 per detector. Code now is something like one per room and 2 in some rooms. A new house could have 10-15 smoke detectors pretty easily. So $300.

They are cheap as shite and plug in play. Go out to dinner one less time every 10 years.
