i believe Angola used to be somewhat of a "prison colony". grew their own food, cleared land, etc. Then the ACLU got involved and said that it was inhumane to make prisoners do that.
they still do it. They just make .03 a day now

you do know the "colonly would just turn into a society just like they are now. there is a hierarchy. You kill/shank/beat up people based on the leaders discretion.

Wasn't Mad Max Thunderdome based on this idea? Two men enter one man leaves?

Well you said there would be no punishment for those who kill in jail, and I was just thinking well someone (guards) has to go in there to collect the dead bodies.
I think the idea is kind of stupid, since the fundamental purpose of a prison is rehabilitation, but if we went the OP's route the best idea would be to just leave the corpses to rot. Pretty shortly inmates would decide they would rather not have to deal with the stench and refrain from slaughter.

The video game, Arkham City, was based on this premise. It didn't work out too well for society and the inmates mutually.

What guards? There are no guards on the ... island.

People will start killing other people within hours. So you have one guy in there for failure to pay child support, and someone starts a rumor that he is a child molester. Boom, dead within the hour
Seems extremely logical
FWIW, none of the criminals would be scared because they'd get to hang out with their buddies 24/7

As long as it's for violent criminals only ( which I assume you have to be to be in a maximum security prison), I'm down. That's how they do it in Peru.

they have prisons like this in SA and they still seem to have plenty of criminals

Not if they just keep them in a pit style area.

No but it sounds like youre thinking it, which sounds racist just so you know

I think you have a misunderstanding of the purpose of prisons.

You're a damn idiot.
You think someone that is in prison for some white collar crime should be in such a violent and harrowing situation?
People make mistakes. If anything, we should be focusing on turning prisons into places where people are actually rehabilitated instead of turning them into worse criminals.

frick you slick. Your mother raised a moron.

People need punishment, not rehabilitation
Lots of punishment, especially murderers, rapists, and other violent criminals

Yeah, I often think that max security prisons are way too safe for the inmates. I mean why do I have to pay for their lavish, relaxed lifestyles? It's total bullshite.
Posted on 10/1/15 at 5:04 pm to Ignignot
The US prison system is already cruel and inhumane.
Posted on 10/1/15 at 5:17 pm to HoustonChick86
You don't like being in a cage, well don't go to prison.

Max security inmates are too safe for inmates? Ha. Read up on USP Pollock, right here in LA. Real safe place....
