Maybe as some schools, but not many. We have to stay in class to “make every minute count” so we can “get them test scores up.”
This is just not true.
Field day is not an old school thing. I had field day in the early 2000s. I've seen field days happening at elementary schools as I'm driving within the past year.

They still do it in the suburban elementary schools around Jaxganisthan, MS

You most likely saw recess or p.e. If a true field day is going to happen, it will be after state testing.

Oh, lord. This is pedantic.
This was not p.e. or recess. This was full on obstacle courses, color coded shirts, kids racing, booths set up, and way more kids than usual.
It was very obviously field day. It may have been at the end of last school year, I don't remember timelines, but even if it wasn't, just because it doesn't meet your criteria doesn't mean it wasn't the same thing.
I am so sorry to break it to you, but kids do still play outside. Just yesterday three kids on roller blades came up to us and wanted to play with our dogs. I went to the neighborhood basketball court last weekend and it was littered with children playing some stupid game with a bunch of rocks.
12 year old you in 19XX was no different than 12 year old Brayden in 2021, other than the fact that he has technology. He has the same hopes, the same fears, and the same desires.

Field Day was/is always at the end of the year. It was always during the last week of school in the 80s/90s too.

You're looking at a Field Day MVP - 3x back-to-back Three-Legged Race champion.
I was always on the tug of war squad as well, but never fat enough to anchor.
Always wanted to do football and Frisbee toss, but in 4th and 5th grade we had some dudes that had repeated a grade and were a mix between Danny Almonte and the East German swim team. With great deference, I let them have their one shining moment.

hell yes. and btw, I always laugh when people say all millennial kids got trophies because, at my school, a few years went by when my team didn't win shite. I was always so mad that we couldn't pick our own teams.

Field day was for pussies
My school had a full fledged boxing ring and guys got in and beat the crap out of each other to settle differences

I won pull ups, sit ups, push ups, and standing broad jump 3rd through sixth grade, but I sucked at running broad jump, v sit and 50 yard dash.

Middle school in the 1980s was like boot camp.

My best event was the "relay padlock race", man it was cheesy...did anyone else have those?

Was an awesome time. Good memories.
And Tetherball. Does that even still exist? Lol

I think the last day rivaled it. Clean out your locker and no homework. People tried crazy stuff thinking there would be no consequences... which was fun to watch.
At my school, the seniors got out at 11:30 every day and we also finished school and graduated 2-3 weeks before the other students.
That last day when the bell rang for everyone else to switch classes and we got to leave FOREVER was great.
