My Granny was on meds for suga diabeetis and went and shot up the post office.
OP didn't specify but I assumed we were talking about mind altering drugs not diabetes pills.

Question is do you believe prescription anti-depressants or anxiety medications play a role in any of this?
I'm beginning to wonder about this myself.

I think doctors definitely over-prescribe and it's caused an addiction problem. That said, you also hear about some of these guys who had been on meds but went off of them and started self-medicating/taking other illegal pills instead. For instance, this Roof character was previously arrested with Suboxone in his possession without a prescription. There's no telling what he's been taking illegally.
By majority, when taken like they're supposed to be taken, the meds generally help people who legitimately need to take them.

We need to stop kick backs to doctors to prescribe this shite.
We already did.

Yeah, saying Joe was taking Wellbutrin and then shot up the mall doesn't tell us anything. Did he skip doses? Did he double up? Had he stopped taking the medicine suddenly?

LOL if you think those payments are kickbacks for prescribing prescription drugs.
Everything given to doctors that is more than $10 in value has to be reported to the government under the Physician Payments Sunshine Act. That means sponsoring doctors to go to conventions, giving seminars to educate doctors about new medical research and providing lunch to them, etc.

Well as psychiatric prescription usage has gone up, murder has gone down. Now this relationship may be spurious, but it is counter to this hypothesis.

Dispute the facts presented in the link junior. I am an owner in the medical industry and deal with MDs on the take everyday. You are talking out of your a-hole.

Most had pros but all of them had their cons. I'd imagine those cons would be maginified on someone who was a special kind of crazy.
You can't possibly read that list, especially the suicides, and think it's all because they were a special kind of crazy.

No but it's another great conspiracy theory. "Some people think he was killed" should read "paranoid nuts think he was killed."

LOL if you think they genuinely give two shits what the doctors have to say. You may be too stupid to realize what a quid-pro-quo is but obviously the docs and pharma companies do.

My deal with this is you would think we would as a society take these sorts of questions seriously at least.
I mean, while we are fighting an enormously costly war on a natural "drug", Doctors are handing out synthetic drugs to teenagers like it's going out of style and if you question all of this you are called crazy.

I'm also pretty sure I've read along the way that if he does have a diagnosis like schizophrenia, substance abuse can also significantly increase their risk in dangerous behavior since they are not exactly following a healthy treatment plan at that point.
I think the Aurora shooter was a similar situation. There were psychiatric meds in his apartment and he had a psychologist who he had stopped seeing. He was also eating Vicodin like candy that day before the shooting. So there's no telling whether he was taking his meds, whether he was over-prescribed, etc.

The link between violence and mental illness/ psychoactive drugs is pretty much undeniable. The problem is that no one wants to address mental illness. It is to expensive to deal with. So politicians and the media look at effect not cause for the answer.
This
Plus, it's an easy area for governors to slash state budgets - when they cut health care funding, rest assured mental health is the first in line.

Is it the prescription drugs that are the causation or are they just a correlation because the people that require these psychiatric drugs are mentally unstable (i.e. crazy) to begin with?

Really? MDs on the take every day? bullshite.
If I pay a doc $100k to speak for my company (the only way to funnel cash to him/her), I won't get $100k worth of prescriptions out of him/her. (Assuming a 18% profit margin, I would need the doctor to write $555k worth of my product to break even. With an average prescription reimbursement of, say $120, I would need 4,600ish prescriptions from the doc. That's 18 prescriptions per working day. Doesn't happen.)
Do some doctors use products that they speak for? Sure. And if you're infuriated by all speaking agreements, this will infuriate you, too. It would be difficult to find a more regulated industry when it comes to business arrangements and compensation than pharmaceuticals.

The vast majority of everything in that website is research money.
