Definitely not clueless as I worked in this industry for 10 years. Currently, my spouse is in the industry as a manager and I get to hear about it daily at dinner.
There may be a few key opinion leaders that get honoraria to speak, but they have to stay on PI, disclose their association with any companies and because they usually (not always) are in academic practice are not the biggest writers in town. Teaching center formularies reign in their scripts.
I also received an honorarium for being a clinical resource in my field and received notification that this was listed as per the Sunshine act.

Relationship - probably, but any causation would be incredibly hard to prove. There are far too many people who take these medications without going on murderous rampages to make the leap. It is interesting though, and I would venture to say that there is a missing link (medication + "_____") in the equation.

Its funny that both you and 808base adamantly denied doctors getting any kickbacks and then you both go on to illustrate how docs get compensation from pharma.

You are obviously not in pharma. Yeah, we've all heard crazy stories. I saw quite a few. But they were by far the exception and didn't really drive any significant portion of business.

I had about 500 docs in my territory. If I was lucky, I could compensate one of those if they agreed to become a speaker for the company and spend a huge amount of time going through the training. Then I might be able to book them for 2 speaking engagements for the year at a rate of between $500-$800 per engagement. Let all that sink in and then continue your idiocy.

You don't have to be in pharma or even in the business. Its fully disclosed. Just because the process by which they compensate isn't illegal doesn't mean the intent is not to provide remuneration for referrals.

Again, you deny it happens then proceed to tell me how it does. Dude, just stop.

Again, compensating a doctor for speaking isn't a kick back. And it didn't make economic sense for either the doctor or me.
Keep babbling, idiot.

No one denied that docs get honoraria. I object to your exaggeration of the relationship to MD's to the pharma industry. In today's hyper regulated environment, it just doesn't happen.
Oh, and I didn't receive any honoraria from pharma, it was from an equipment distributor to act as a clinical resource.
You seem butthurt that you can't get some.

He needs to grow his market share so he can quit complaining about the competition buying off the doctors.

I don't see him as a rep, I see him as an office manager that is butthurt that the MDs make so much more than him and is lashing out at pharma.
He needs to go to med school, pay his dues, and make bank.

You are both salary clowns who believe anything your district manager tells you.
The real world is a much more nuanced place. Maybe your spouse can tell you about it sometime.

Salary clowns. Lols.
You have no idea how pharma honoraria work and you're here holding forth on kickbacks while citing anti-kickback legislation without a hint of self-awareness.

I wish someone from my company would get on the damn ball and get some big kickback $$$$$ into my territory!
I can't give a doc's office a pen worth $2.17 any longer because that cheap pen is some kind of evil, influencing implement.
I can't bring an office coffee in the morning without having every person present sign a sign in sheet and log all names and money spent into our tracking system so that every single nickel spent on that doc and his office can be published for all to see.
I'm launching a new drug and I have been in my territory many, many years (I won't specify a number, let's just say it's double digits), so I have some long standing relationships. I got one high prescriber on board early and has actually written the most prescriptions in the nation.
Someone from our compliance actually called his office to make sure I hadn't given him more than the one breakfast and afternoon snack I reported in the system.
It's all such a massive joke at this point. The industry is dying and I'm just staying around as long as I can. Hopefully to get my kids through college.
You want some insight on to how overly regulated pharma reps are? Go peruse cafepharma.com.
People that think pharma reps are wining and dining docs for scripts are still living in 1997.

Oh the irony. The only reason it exists is to provide legal renumeration to docs. Jebus christ how naive are you?

Not a salary clown, sorry for that. I run a private practice and see patients 35 hours per week. I don't have a district manager, gave that up 19 years ago.
If I were to guess, you are either a disgruntled pharmacist or a practice manager that is frustrated with your job and income. You are the architect of your destiny, don't forget that. Pharma, and your perception that they are buying off MDs, is not responsible for your frustration so get to work in changing it.
Posted on 6/19/15 at 12:33 am to Robin Masters
The reason it exists is to compensate doctors for their time in training and preparing and speaking on a subject to other medical professionals. They must use a company-generated slide deck and cannot deviate from it. The presentations are audited by compliance departments, both internal and external. You either know this and are trolling or don't know this and heard a drug rep telling of something they did which is already illegal (like you cited earlier).

Please stop guessing and in terms of income I more than likely give more to uncle sam than you gross. I am in no way disgruntled and actively participate in all legal forms of persuasion everyday/all day. Don't think docs are bought off by pharma but I do think they enjoy perks.
