Red River atchafalaya river name change?

I’m looking at a map of Louisiana and it looks like the Red River is the Atchafalaya River. It changes names right where it flows into the Mississippi. Why does basically one river have 2 names?

Because it’s 2 rivers. Just because 2 rivers are connected, doesn’t mean they are the same river. Same with oceans.

Red River was a tributary of the Mississippi. The Atchafalaya is a distributary of the Mississippi. Atchafalaya took the flow of the Red from the Mississippi.

Because the Old River Control Structure calls the shots. You got a problem, take it up with the ORCS.

Why aren't all the rivers just called the Mississippi River?

Being from Shreveport, more like the Red River brutally took 30% of the Mississippi River to pound town, and their offspring is the Atchafalaya River.
In the Red River's quest to pound town all he who dare get in his way, the Ouachita River also found itself succumbing to the Red River's wrath, forcefully demanding ye river combination maintain the 3 letter name, which is what he only sees, Red.

I vote to rename the Miss River through Baton Rouge as the Red Stick River
This is Louisiana, not Mississippi!

In a way, the creation of Shreveport is the demise of Baton Rouge and New Orleans. How it was always meant to be. Removing all the log jams along Red, 3 rivers area, and Atchafalaya formation, to get to and create Shreveport, is what eventually made the Atchafalaya take on more of the Mississippi, which eventually will cause the MS River to go to Atchaf. Maybe centuries, thousands of year down the road.

Fun fact: it's Red River, not "The Red River" and never "The Red."
