Why do people in South Louisiana insist on eating this on Mondays? I know in the past this was a tradition because people felt like it was a good, hearty, protein-rich food to start the week off with. A lot of people worked hard physical labor jobs on farms at the time, so this was a good idea.

Why do people do it now? Are they just blindly carrying on a tradition from the past which is now pointless? It seems like everywhere you go to get lunch on Monday there’s a red beans and rice special. It gets kind of old sometimes.

It was originally because it was made with the leftover meats from Sunday meals. And I absolutely love red beans and rice

Not good protein. Sounds more like tradition from when people were poor.

Eat it on Monday; have enough leftovers for Tuesday and Wednesday; allows you to share the wonderful essence of your farts with co-workers all week.

I don’t. You can eat at my house if you’re homeless and have no other food options. Otherwise, why do you care?

Monday was laundry day, back in the day women used to soak their beans while they did the family's laundry.

So don't get the special. Go back on Tuesday.

I love red beans and rice with meat/sausage on any day though.

Accurate
quote:

Meats such as ham, sausage (most commonly andouille and Chaurice), and tasso ham are also frequently used in the dish. The dish is customary - ham was traditionally a Sunday meal and Monday was washday. A pot of beans could sit on the stove and simmer while the women were busy scrubbing clothes. The dish is now fairly common throughout the Southeast. Similar dishes are common in Latin American cuisine, including moros y cristianos and gallo pinto.

Why did Louisiana land on red beans and not black beans?

Right. This is the actual tradition, from what I have been told at least.
