re: Recommendations on a ZTR mower

Exmark or Hustler. I personally prefer as Exmark for their grass discharge system when weather doesn't allow you to maintain the same amount of time between cuts. Of course, my local dealer does carry a large inventory on parts, which carries a lot of weight for me. Nothing pisses me off more than waiting 3 weeks for a somewhat minor repair.

Strange, I see that now too. 1.5 yrs ago when I bought mine they were all Kawasaki...even the Lowe's sold units.
That's what I was thinking. I knew I saw all of them had kawasaki's.

I've got a 48" Hustler Sport with the 18hp Kawi, paid around 4200 for it out the door, as I recall. Like most ZTRs, it won't do too well on slopes/ditches, but overall I've been pleased with the Hustler and spent a good amount of time comparing brands while trying to keep within a budget. The Sport was the best option for me.
At 3k, I think the Raptor model that Lowes sells might be a good bet, but I really don't know what the differences are that make that unit sell at almost 1000 less. Never had much reason to compare since I had the Sport before they started making the Raptor. Now I think the Raptor has replaced the Sport, essentially. Regardless, something makes that mower substantially cheaper and sold at a price point the big boxes want. Just my .02...

My yard has a lot of trees and other obstacles to mow around. I looked hard at ZTR mowers a few years back but opted for a conventional Deere lawn tractor due to the weight of the ZTR mowers. The lightest ZTR I found was made by Dixon and it still weighed in at over 800 lbs.
I also chose to trade with the local JD dealer instead of the big box stores. Their service after the sale has been top notch although pricey. The only big problem I've had was an electrical issue with the PTO.

It's like any other product in that, as competition grows, items get cheaper over time. The technology and engineering behind the hydrostatic transmissions is no exception. That's the main thing that drives the price up on a ZTR. The transmissions in my FastTrack SDs are like $1600 each so that's $3200 worth or parts and the whole mower only cost me $6K new.
Also, the Raptor doesn't have the same foot control deck the Sport did. The Sports are actually closer to the FastTracks from 5-6 years ago so that's why they were more expensive. You can't really compare a sport from 3-4 years ago to a Raptor and wonder why it's cheaper when you take everything into account.

Uh, no. Mowers have not gotten cheaper over time. If the hydrostats get cheaper due to "competition" then why are mowers more and more expensive if that is the most important component?

Yes, I can. I said I haven't researched what the differences are, so I can wonder why the Raptor is cheaper. I suspect the unit is made with cheaper parts (as in, inferior quality vs the Sport that sold four years ago for 1200 more).

Sport had a ALL WELDED tubular frame... expensive to build. It also had heavier duty spindles and bearing on the decks.
Foot assist deck lift on the Sport.
Sport had side-saddle tank, expensive to build also. Raptor has under the seat plastic tank.
The Sport deck was also more reinforced than the Raptor.
What many people don't consider is now that Excel/Hustler has grown as a company and greatly upgraded their manufacturing process. Greater efficiency, leaner production facility and much larger VOLUME than before can get the cost per unit production down.

Because they have added a lot of unnecessary crap to a lot of them. Exmark and Ferris make mowers with shocks on them, Hustler has automatic tilt decks, they all have bigger engines for speed, etc and also inflation. But on the lower price points you can get a better mower now for your money vs 3-4 years ago due to other things, like the transmissions, getting cheaper and that price point has a lot more competition. The transmission that's in the Raptor has been out for a few years now and is cheaper now vs when it first came out FYI.
ZTRs don't get outrageously expensive until you get into the commercial lines.

The sport came with a Briggs engine IIRC? I would take the current Kohler over a Briggs any day so that's not a cheaper part. The Raptor also has the same transmissions as the sport FYI.
I did mention the deck system on the Raptor is not foot operated. That's one thing they did to cut cost and get it to the price point.

The Sport was almost overkill for a residential mower for Hustler to compete with the box store Cub Cadets of the world which is why they retooled and made the Raptor. Doesn't mean it is a bad mower at all just because it's $1K cheaper. Like I said earlier, it was basically the FastTrack from 6-8 years ago and there wasn't enough distinction or price difference in the Sport or the FastTrack to justify having both in their line up.

Good info, thanks. I've been more or less happy with my Sport. Often wish I had spent the extra money on the beefier Fastrak, but the wife damn near divorced me when we shelled out 4k for a lawnmower in the first place.
Back in the day (late 90s), I worked with an outfit that did a lot of rural/commercial properties. We ran 60" Grasshoppers and 72" Deeres. Hours and hours of riding.
Man, those were the days...

I got a Hustler Raptor SD 54" for 4k. They need to get the hour meters fixed. My kids left the key on and ran up the hours. Damn thing should only run if the lawnmower is running.

I can agree with some of what you're saying, certainly, but getting a better mower for your money isn't the same thing as mowers being cheaper. That's all I'm saying.
My Sport came with an 18 horse Kawasaki, fwiw.
Hopefully the OP gets the Raptor and posts his experience with it. I did see one out in front of Lowes last summer that had been returned (apparently due a belt snapping) and they had it on one of those "open box" sales for around 2k. If I hadn't been working and an hour away from home, I probably would've bought it just to play with and resell.

@stout
I have a possible line on a 6 or 7 year old exmark 48" with less than 150 hours for ~1500
Is that a good deal? Really good deal?

What are the differences between the Hustler Raptor and the Raptor SD.
I'm mowing four acres, once a week and want a mower that will hold up.

I purchased the Hustler Raptor SD 54" in November after purchasing a home on 2 acres. I've only gotten to use it twice but I love it so far. It took me 1.5 hours to mow my 2 acres including the learning curve. It was $4000 with 48 months interest free. Got it from Michael Canal & Sons in Hammond.

i recommend the big dog. Same mower more features, hustler went to way of big box and big dog made for local mower shops. Red is better looking than hustler yellow too.
