Physical work is very rewarding and can help with depression and addiction. The oilfield is booming and you can make six figures pretty easily. Trades are needed every where also. You can learn a trade, get apprenticeship and make good money too.

Nashville

You should be able to find something in Nashville.

You need to stop smoking weed, now. This coming from a fellow stoner. Sometimes you gotta cut it off for a bit.

You also need to find any kind of work now. Having not worked for 4 years, find a service industry job if you have to, but you are much more likely to get hired if you are already working somewhere.

You are still pretty young, and you do have some good experience, so just get out there, and build yourself back up, block by block. Don't let dumb pride get in the way.

And make sure you keep addressing your mental issues the right way. Don't think that you are over whatever it is you were dealing with. Do not sleep on this.

Do not get sucked back in to bad habits with substance abuse. If you have to stop hanging out with certain people in your life, then so be it. I had to stop associating with damn near my entire friend circle in Birmingham so I could get my mind right. Doesn't mean I don't still like those people and consider them friends, but I couldn't let them influence me in a bad way anymore.

Hope everything comes together, and works out for you.

Just lie and say you were self employed for the four year gap.

For real. This guy hasn't worked in 4 years, is an addict, and alcoholic. But yea ill take a job with a 70k base, a company car, and whatever else in terms of benefits.

Another way to go is just put Independent Contract Work as your gap. Then say you can't give much info because of an NDA still in place.

Oil and Gas is booming. Move to Houston find a gasket/flange company to work Sales. Start at the bottom and prove your self. You'll rise fast if you have a drive....the kids you are competing with don't have a drive. AND you know what bottom looks like. Lets Roll

Clean record. Just four years of not working.

Stop telling them the four year gap was health related. No one wants that potential liability. Tell them you were caring for an elderly relative and living off of savings.

Did you let yourself go? Do you look polished, fit, professional, good shoes, professional attire, expensive haircut, manicured?

You want to be in sales and you come here seeking advice? If you are a good sales guy, you sell yourself. If you can't do that, then you need to do something else.

You didn't work because, you were taking care of an ailing parent. Go with that.

I sold $35,000 worth of cutco and did four years of pharma sales after college. Mental health and addiction got the better of me and it’s four years later. No jobs seem to want to touch me. I’m talking about the $70K base, car allowance type jobs. I don’t know what to do and even the lower level sales jobs aren’t touching me. I used to make six figures. Now I’m unemployed and broke. Times have changed. I’m completely humbled.

If it was your money paying the 70k salary, along with providing a car AND the liability that goes along with that, would you employ someone with your history or someone perfectly qualified that has never had a substance issue?

Unless you know someone willing to do you a personal favor, you aren’t going to get a job like that. No one is going to take that risk. At this point, everyone has had an experience with an addict and 98% of them are bad. You have all that working against you. I’m generally pretty forgiving and believe the best of people and I’d likely steer clear.

Like others said, I’d figure out what I could do with my hands because the white collar world may be off limits until you can build some history.
