Is petroleum actually easier than ChemE

We all like to beat our chest about what is the toughest. I know there's a good bit of personal feelings involved in that. I am not great with chemistry, so that plays a small part. But I'd still say ChemE is the toughest taking that into account. And I was an ME. I'd love to say ME, but I just think ChemE throws a lot at you.

PETE isn't necessarily for morons. But like you said, it's a direct application. If ME could spin off a curriculum that is just Plant Engineering, you could cut out a big % of the classes and just have people learn pump curves, thermo, and fluid mechanics. That's what PETE is to me. Very specified learning to one industry. No other engineering is like that. Plus most oilfield engineering is just industry standardized formulas.

And to your other comment about thinking salaries were higher out of school, I'd say 50k is pretty damned solid. My wife has her MBA and she had a tough time finding a job making more than 30k right out of school. College degrees don't suddenly make people throw money at you. Especially from not-so-great schools (no offense, I don't look at LSU as all that impressive either and I went there).

In the future of collegiate education, I can see many more programs being developed that are completely tailored to a very specific industry. The only problem with that is that it can potentially lock you in. If you dont progress in it, finding another type of work can be VERY hard.

I will admit, even though I love SUBR (obviously), I have a more level head than most of its graduates. As graduate I have seen first hand that the education simply is not at competitive level with other state universities (engineers most notably)

I know that I will probably have to take a pay cut, but at least I can work towards a better future.

i have figured out your game

you are using this forum to identify as a minority for your future challenges in filing for M/WBE status

i actually applaud your diligence. your access to government contracts due to your identification will be groundbreaking

Apply out west. If they seem unimpressed by your resume, tell them to check their privilege and stop being racist towards a young black man from the South.

65k to 70k engineering job

Depends on industry... example, that pay would be reasonable in the O&G/Petro industry.

This seems crazy - was her job search confined to a small area??? Maybe I just don't know anything about starting salaries for MBAs

I don't understand why physics was easier at Tech than engineering. The last two years of physics classes should be harder than any engineering classes. Difficulty is often contingent on your classmates, but damn most physics programs draw the super nerds.

I had three, out of 13 eventual graduates, 4.0 stereotypical physics nerds in every single class I took, and one guy I studied with that was smarter than them. The teachers absolutely tested to push those kids, so damn they were borderline impossible for us kids who could actually get girlfriends.

Did Tech just have no one interested in the basic sciences? Do they not a have a strong research program that generates PhDs? At LSU they NEVER quit weeding out kids.

Yes, she was looking to work where I was, and she was looking in a specific industry. But after a year, she was making a good bit more. No experience trumped having the degree. Now that she has experience. Initial offers are in the 50k range.

Thank Obama for the lower yearly salaries now.
