It is objectively true for Birmingham. Somewhat true but arguable for BR. Dont think it is true of Mobile, but Im not as familiar with that city. Last I heard Mobile is pretty crappy these days too.

Conundrum
It's almost like the chicken and egg issue. If you have good jobs available, the right people will come back. You also have to have an educated work force... but that work force can't afford $500K renovated homes right off the bat so where are they gonna live... It's part of a cycle that may have a broken link and doesn't go all the way around

The place is an absolute shithole and it will never get better when you elect officials who are under investigation for fraud.....
It is the most embarrassingly run city in the nation and the leaders KEEP GETTING WORSE.

Ya'll mouth breathers use this phrase too often.
If you were here this weekend to see people from all over the world in for Jazzfest, PGA golf, and weddings, etc, you wouldn't say shite hole.
12 million visitors from around the world will come visit this year.
The real estate market is on fire and they can't hardly build condos fast enough.
That's not a shite hole. A shithole is a small town trailer trailer park or a run down town in this region where half the people are on wellfare and the town provides nothing of value or entertainment.

As long as Madigan’s is there, I’ll be just fine.

Well this part is a huge steaming pile of bull shite. Nola has it's problems, no doubt, but it's not the worst run in the nation.

Cities everywhere are weighed down by poverty, dwindling tax bases, loss of jobs. Inner cities are in decay. Affluent (white) people move out, and when the decay starts to reach them, they move further out. The lucky cities are the ones that are able to reinvigorate and gentrify the decayed, abandoned parts, which works its way out from the middle just like the decay did years earlier. Cities won't revive until people of means start moving back IN.
This is where New Orleans has actually done better than many other places. There is a historic housing stock that people are spending lots of good money to renovate. People on the outside like to complain about how shitty New Orleans is, and the crime and the bad schools and the culcha. But at least people have been slowly moving back in as opposed to simply leaving. True, a lot of the people moving in are childless out-of-towners or hipsters. But God bless those folks. They are pioneers, willing to take on the financial and safety risks before it becomes hot and trendy for everybody else.
Stage 1 of gentrification is that you must have the pioneers. Businesses and amenities of life follow people, not vice versa. Want to get rid of the criminals? Start buying up their neighborhoods.
The first time I visited to NOLA post Katrina was in 2008. It really is remarkable to see "the progress" that NOLA has made over the last decade. Too bad yall just elected a mayor that is going to do her best to stop those pioneers and reverse the progress.

One has to look much harder to find any real authenticity anymore. The very nolaphiles preaching authenticity have actually made it more inauthentic.Other than maybe mid city, Metairie is more authentic "New Orleans" than New Orleans at this point.
This is fricking comical.

Wrong.
Cantrell is a SJW, but she was also one of the most pro-development council members in N.O.

There is no point arguing there are certain people who just wont like NOLA regardeless of its progress. There is a reason it is one of the top tourist destinations in the world. Its a great place. There are some crime issues but they are mostly limited to a few select areas that 90% of the people that come here or live here won't visit. Outside of the quarter which has higher crime rate the rest of the area has about the same amount of crime as other major city. When in doubt follow the money and money is pouring into NOLA at the moment.

This post is very true. Compare present New Orleans to 1980s New Orleans. The city is doing so much better in a lot of ways. The CBD is growing. Many once decrepit parts of the city are being revitalized. Yes the city still has issues, but every big city does.
That's why the whole monument thing was so dumb. If not for that, Landrieu would have a 70% approval rating right now.

That is all true, and New Orleans has certainly improved in terms of restaurants, hotels, bars, etc but anything meaningful in terms of infrastructure, jobs, and government has just not happened.

There are.many aspects to condo purchases. I have one with family.
Sure NO has some nice qualities and landscape away from the city...but dude, its lipstick on a pig...its shite s
Infrastructure sucks, pumping stations are shite, crime is rampant, city officials at the highest levels are in jail, and what does the great city do? Elects a dumber than rocks moron who is under indictment for credit card fraud to run the show! Cant make that shite up.
Again, plenty of nice small areas to be, but as a whole...its a dump, with tremendous cultural significance.
But to be fair, it is in one of the most corrupt, worse run STATES in the country.

"America has only three great cities: New York, San Francisco, and New Orleans. Everywhere else is Cleveland."

Not to mention carjackings are up 67%. That’s appalling, to say the least.

Obviously you know nothing of the private/parochial schools of Nola. I know the fed mandates in government schools and whether it’s Texas or NY or wherever, government schools are subpar. End of story.

Possibly the most small minded and self indulgent nola quote out there. Always chuckle when some "well read" person throws it out there.
New Orleans is not nearly as unique as many wish it to be. Time spent in Memphis, Savannah, Charleston and other places proves this.
New Orleans minus capitalist significance equates almost perfectly to Savannah. A fun, historically significant place to visit, but not a place you really want to live.
Now Charleston? Take Nola, get rid of the litter, grime, passed out druggies on neutral grounds, and smell and what you have is similar to Charleston. A little stuffier perhaps but definitely a city that a middle class family could move to and prosper.
The quote was also made when Nola was a center of global commerce and was a successful city with relevance. In other words, over a century ago.
By the way, SF is crumbling too. NY is still NY but there has been a significant out migration of the middle class in the last decade.

Not even close to "end of story." Public schools in New Orleans are apallingly bad, except for a small handful of magnets. You obviously know nothing of the topic if you actually believe that drivel.
Parochial schools are uneven but several are pretty good (Schools you have to pay for). That said, a very large percentage of graduates of those schools now live in Texas and other states. One of the many reasons for this is that you can send your kids to good public schools in those places. Also because of more and higher paying jobs, functioning infrastructure, and lack of completely backwards mentality.
