The term "colored girl" could be generational.

I know my parents who were born 80 something years ago and their parents called blacks "colored" people.

That was a sign of the times.

Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of times she would say I worked with doctor so and so today and he's so cool and laid back.

People are assholes, but you are there to learn and care for a patient.

Some of the most racist, professional people I have met have been black doctors. Especially in a group setting when everyone looks the same

Or worse. My 90 year old granny, upon entering the county health waiting room in Montgomery, said very loudly, "Look at all these n____s having babies!!!". My mom almost broke her neck getting us out to the car and out of there.

The above comment doesn't have much to do with this thread but the memory makes me laugh.

1 example- I've seen doctors change their prescribing habits because a black rep started to call on them. I say that as someone who's partner was black and benefited from the arrangement

It isn't exactly racism, it's learned/conditioned behavior.

If you are about to head out walking down the street and on one side you have a group of well groomed professionally dressed young anglo-saxon men and on the other you have a same aged group full of blacks with tats in wife-beaters and boxers hanging out their sagging pants. What side of the street would you think you have a better chance of getting jacked??... The answer doesn't make you a racist.

How do you know that the change was due to race? It could have just been the usual sex.

That article is ridiculous. What did she expect the doctor to say to the family in rebel flags?

I've had a patient call a nurse the n-word and let them know that wouldn't fly. I don't remember having race brought up otherwise.

Agreed, but if the races were reversed I would still pick the side that was better dressed.

If I were a betting man, I'd put my nickel on "poor performance" as the reason for the unkind evaluation.

Typically, when a peer of mine received a bad evaluation, it was deserved. The only ones who questioned it were those with too little insight to find some way to improve.

Kcoyote, are you in upper or lower alabama? I teach at one of these places. The current 3rd years are fine (still overly coddled though), but the 4th years are terrible.

Who gives a crap if she thinks her patients hate her. She needs to put on her big girl pants and do the job she is paid to do. What is striking is that in In her quest to root out intolerance and injustice, she is ignoring her own elitist privilege as UVA Med.
