I have actually thought about this before as well. I do drive a lot in my current job, but that is all in passenger vehicles. I think driving a truck would be easy work, but would be very boring...and since you generally get paid by the mile, traffic jams would be absolutely maddening.
I honestly think the worst part about it for me would be the fact that truck drivers get no respect at all from most others in the world.

I drive not cross country though.
I started in the oil field from LA to Tx alot went to Cali once but wouldn't do that again.
I then got on with a fuel and oil company, worked up to driving tank trailers delivering gas and diesel to stations and rigs, really love it. Unfortunately I was in an accident and the truck blew up been at home for 6 months now but want to be back driving already.

I think it would be cool to do if you're not tied down with kids/family. I like being on the road. I assume there are clean non-trash drivers that don't do drugs or bang hookers.
How does being an owner/operator work? I assume you take more risk but since you're a non-trash non-druggie non hooker-banger, you should be able to manage it. That would be the ticket.
And if you are a trash druggie hooker-banger, you aren't making that much money otherwise and probably have a shitty life and don't care about making $50k and never being home.

Are these salary ranges being thrown out really this low for trucking? I would have thought more.
shite, if I was going to choose some new career and didn't care or need to be around family, I would learn to weld and chase turnaround work or try for some offshore/overseas assignments if you had any marketable skill.

I've watched Red Viking Trucker on YouTube a good bit when I can't sleep. Dude has a degree, but quit the rat race to drive for a living. He gives a lot of honest feedback on what it is like. You should check it out.

No they make more than 50k. My dad drives a truck 5 days a week, home every night and home on weekends. He makes way more than 50k easily probably around 70k or 80k, just have to get on with a good company.

My uncle drove long haul for Wal Mart and made strong salary, and was able to retire with a great pension and everything. My aunt would even ride with him on long trips.
Not sure if it’s changed...I saw a thing recently where salaries for truck drivers is actually flat and hasn’t risen for inflation, and tons of foreigners (Russian, Polish, Czech, etc) are coming here and driving trucks

If you want to see the usa, become a teacher. You get 2 months off and you even out the pay so you get income all the time. Stick it out and get a retirement and travel more.
