I’m curious about the hot shot truck driving sub genre...I wonder how it differs from a work schedule and pay standpoint from being a long haul or OTR short haul driver.

You need to won your own truck
You should get an LLC
If you dont have the truck or the company you arent getting paid well.

I deal with truck drivers where I work daily. One guy I talked to alot said he was getting his own rig and leaving to do hot shot driving. He said you work when you want and they pay you cash on delivery. He said a buddy of his made like 100K in 5-6 months.
Take it fwiw, all i know is he quit coming here and ppl who know him say he's doing well.

OP why don’t you pick a field that won’t be made obsolete by self driving rigs before you retire.

The standard 18 wheeler box freight driver makes 40-50K a year. As i said before about my friend driving it blows. You never really see anything other than interstate and truck stops. Can't explore anywhere and stuck in the cab of a truck 24/7. It is a miserable life. the companies frick them over every chance they get

I looked into doing Hot Shot briefly. It has its pros and cons of course.
You can drive for a company but they lease your truck from you so you can't use it for personal use when not driving
Or you can have your own operation but it's very hard to get loads over the established companies that have contracts. You'll do a lot of hustling for years trying to get established and become a companies go to guy
It's appealing because you only take the loads you want. I'm about to go to shift work where I'll be gone 3 nights in a row over the weekend. Why not be my own boss and make a 3 day run taking a load to the Canadian border and grab a back load and make a decent chunk of change

Nope. I have a really good job, particularly for my age. They reserve the right, but I've never had one. It's usually for people they want to fire without paying unemployment. The higher your are, the less they test.

This is the problem. People often ended up doing things that are significantly more harmful, because it leaves their system so quickly.
