Well the need is there to upgrade, that sounds healthy, just make sure you are upgrading, don't quit on the goal but do find several options, for example.
Military service offers some of what you want plus an opportunity for education within the Service, as well as further education benefits after completion.

same here... we have a lennox plant here in town and its basically non stop 1 ton dually pickups with gooseneck trailers rolling out with commercial ac units on them. I've often pondered the situation

Buying your own rig is about the only way to do it. I know flatbed owner operators that make over $100k after expenses.
Pay that truck off and hire somebody else to drive it then buy another one.
Company drivers probably average $40k but some can get up to the $70s if they run hard enough.
There is a driver shortage and it’s only going to get worse with new regulations starting next month.

commercial cross-country driving is going to be phased out by robots within a decade
the only trucking most people are going to be doing is taking it from the local warehouse to the local store

Be prepared for long hours, getting stuck a few days each month in a dry freight area, and shite pay for living inside a cab
The on duty and driving hours are also super regulated these days. I don’t even think you can legally use paper logs anymore.
But, I do know if you cut a basketball in half and place it over the truck sat system, you can manually change your hours once you remove it

The companies that ship 300-400 loads per day might turn to self driving trucks assuming they’re actually available.
Drop in the bucket in the grand scheme of things.

I semi retired 8 yrs ago and became bored at the house. Wife said she was leaving if I didn’t find something to do. Went to work for a long haul Tanker Co and it’s been awesome.
1st year ran a little over 115k Miles earning just over $65K w/ safety bonuses and add-ons. You’re paid for detention (waiting to load/unload), stand-by, layover, breakdowns. Dispatch is primarily east of Rockies and is scheduled to where you rarely have to work over 9hrs a day. Work 3 weeks on 1 week off, pay increases per mile w/ each yr of service.
It’s been awesome, because at any moment, I can say Frick it and turn the equipment back in. Would not recommend Dry Van or Flatbeds, pay is not nearly as good, and beginners are weeded thru like jelly beans. If you learn to properly operate a tanker, doors open to go to wherever if your record stays clean.
We can trade e-mails if you want more info. We’re looking for 25 drivers before yr end.
