The news footage of dozens of cell phones stores being looted has me curious as I've purchased a few cell phones in my life by now...
Will the cell phones that have been looted at these location even work/accept cell service activation without proof of purchase or activation by a person from the store? Aren't these phones coded & scanned into a system locking in their location & pre-activation status then scanned again upon legal purchase + need for activation? Isn't that something that these really smart phone engineers have in place to prevent the "value" of stealing their expensive/high profit yielding phones...?
Or am I giving far too much credit to the system?

I'm pretty certain the stores can easily brick these phones, but I'm no expert.

If they have the IMEI and serial numbers for every phone in their store they probably can, but even that would be an absolute pain in the arse to go through
They'll probably just submit an insurance claim and call it a day

iOS activation requires IMEI and device SN last time I checked. Need to look it up again.

Yes, they're actually locked when they're shipped to the stores and aren't unlocked until purchase.
What will likely happen is they'll sell them on the secondary market, and the purchaser won't be able to activate it. I'd imagine as well there are folks that have figured out how to unlock them.

It's a scare tactic, Apple doesn't give a shite about a few thousand stolen phones. Most will be sold to those foreign owned hood cell phone stores, sold again to be shipped overseas to be refurbished, then sold again on the internet

Looks like Apple went away from the SN as well. Just Activation Lock which has a work around from Apple and 3rd party.
