Question on 3 & 4 year old t-ball practices
My 3 year old son just got his t-ball practice and game schedule. I signed up to be a assistant coach and I am instantly regretting it.

They have practice for the next 4 weeks from 6-7 on Wednesday and Saturday. Then they have their games at 4:30 on Saturday once all he practice sessions are over. Did everyone forget these kids are 3 and 4? I asked my wife what the hell she signed us up for because my kid, while athletic, is going to hate baseball before he is 6. I already hate it but can’t believe how intense this crap is at such an early age.

My question is whether this is normal or not.

You play your best ball before travel ball.

re: Question on 3 & 4 year old t-ball practices
I coached my kid last year and will do it again this year. Thats what I never understood, why push them? We would play against teams that would practice twice a week. Coaching kids that age is like corralling cats, why try to make them all stars already?

We would have one 45 minute practice a week then two games one day a weekend. They love batting, but hate playing in the field. Just try to figure out a way to make practice fun and theyll keep coming bak.

At least he didn't say his kid was playing Lacrosse.

And yes this is a normal schedule.

Not being a dick because i really wasnt aware.. but how can a 3 or 4 year old playing tball even be fun? Seems too young by a couple of years. More of a play date than actual learning the sport.

Mine started at 4, we played community until 7 then started community + travel ball after the community season ended at 8.

This year at 11 he says baseball is boring and he doesn't want to play anymore.

Frick me, I loved it but apparently he didn't.

what days do you have him signed up for private instruction aside from organized team activities?

Call me crazy, but signing a 3 year old up for tee ball is crazier than whatever the schedule turns out to be.

Play catch in the yard...the end.

At this level, a "game" is more or less a bunch of little kids being told by coach what to do. It isn't like the kids show up and play a regular game while everybody sits in the stands.

Don't forget the #1 goal for all the kids is to have fun. Nothing will send them running away from you on Saturday mornings faster than putting pressure on them to perform at this age.

Two hours of practice per week is not a lot.

Completely appropriate for the age group.

How else are they going to learn the game?

You really have to start pushing these kids now before they start playing on the streets.

I’ve coached t-ball the past 5 years and that’s normal. I put them all in position and have them field the ball then let everyone bat and that usually takes up the hour. Some coaches get cutthroat with t-ball but I let the kids have fun otherwise they will be burnt out by 6.

At that age we did practice 1 to 2 days a week for 3 weeks and then 1 practice and 1 game per week for the season.

Usually several of the practices and games get rained out and you don't bother trying to make them up.

You are teaching how to field a ground ball, proper throwing mechanics, and which base to run to and when. It isn't that intense or complicated. Maybe 3 of the kids will get it. The others will be introduced to the game, so it comes easier for them the next season. Just make sure the kids have fun and learn at least something about baseball.
