been with my company for almost 39 years and have loved every minute of it, was in a position to leave at 55 but wasn't ready to hang it up, I reached mandatory retirement age for my position and they asked me to stay on and help train you restless, unmotivated, underachieving young'n's I have date of original hire vacation so it's sort of a part time gig with full time pay/benefits, going to stay with it as long as I'm still enjoying it

Exactly. Park it in a prominent spot on driveway, pop that hood and tap on some stuff as if you’re seriously overhauling the engine - I guess until the crisis dissipates. It gets so hot you will need a tank top too.

It's pretty easy to find motivation.
I was in the military 31 years. Retired last year and started to draw my pension. Got a very easy job that pays well. I recently bought a lake house and a boat. I have very few responsibilities anymore. Every weekend is a 3 day work week. My child is almost out of school. I'm healthy. Everything is coming together.

Insurance and money are the only things keeping me from quitting

At this point, I’m just willing myself to retirement. Been with the same company for 26yrs. I have about 2-3yrs until the house is paid off and about 6.5yrs until the kids are out of high school. Once the house is paid for, I’ll feel a lot better if things were to go sideways. But once the kids are out of high school, retirement is there for the taking.

Luckily when I hit that mega million tonight I won’t have to worry about this anymore.

Nobody wants a job until they don't have one.

I'm kinda like my ol blue tick hound, I like to lay around in the shade.
I ain't got no money, but I damn sure got it made.

Back to college at 42. Selling my house and using equity to get close to paying cash for something that will last us 9 years when the youngest graduates. Should be finished with my BS and MBA in three years. The goal is to be debt free in a couple of years, and without the house note that's doable.
This is the path that's motivating me.

a lot of pilots have had rocky careers due to hitting hiring cycles at the wrong time, going with companies that weren't ran very well, getting stuck at places they really didn't want to be, and/or getting laid off multiple times, I am fortunate that I hit every opportunity at the ideal time and had a truly blessed career, hired pretty young at the leading edge of the biggest hiring boom in the history of the industry at the largest airline in the free world, minimum time as an FO, not a whole lot of time as a narrow body CA, always had the pick of schedules, vacation, airplanes, etc., I've had a good ride and unsolicited job offers seem to roll in every week right now, I'm still having a blast

We have about 6 yrs left on the mortgage and 2.5 yrs for the last kid to be out of HS.
We'll most likely sell this house when the kids are gone but I don't think we'll buy something much more expensive. Might do a 10 yr mortgage and try to pay it off in 5 if we need to.

Well they don't get any cheaper

All I can say is the older you get, the more of a "frick it" attitude you possess. Most try to move up in their careers and keep climbing the ladder.....then one day the "frick it" Montra creeps into your mind and it never leaves.

That’s awesome, good for you!
My neighbor growing up flew transatlantic 757s for Delta post military and I know he absolutely loved it. Just retired a few years ago.

I've reached a point where I am happy where I am at. I've managed people before and don't want that again, so I will just plug along and do my job. If needed I will put in some extra time handling claims but the days of working 70-80 hrs a week are long over for me

I worked for a company for the last almost 10 years that I didn't mind the work and absolutely loved the folks I worked with. The owner, however, was a complete douchebag and completely ruined it for all of us. Everyone there talked to each other about ways to get out and what other jobs we could do. I switched professions at the beginning of 2022 and am much happier.
I have 1 kid that's a sophomore in HS and 1 in college. Not sure what's going to happen when they graduate and luckily my wife is a go-getter.
I've got plenty of hobbies to take up my time when I finally quit working, just hope I can afford them.
ETA: If I had invested all the money I've paid in private school tuition, I could be retired today at 50. But hopefully it's worth it in the long run.

I like my job. I've been doing it for so long I can do it in my sleep. Not too much stress. I have 15 years until retirement. I'll be 58 then. Time will fly by. My motivation is to cross that finish line.
