I'll assemble a committee to conduct a study to find someone intelligent who can help you.

So a few answers for your questions and comments

- I have not tried to rinse the ice. When I look at the ice, it does seem more smooth than my ice.

- I have brought my own ice before in a cooler (store bought ice) and its been fine. It is certainly the ice causing the issue

- Its not the tonic water. I use the small bottles so I dont have any left over. Its a new bottle every time and I dont have any issue with them at home. Publix, diet tonic water

- Its not cheap alcohol. I buy good alcohol always..

Im thinking more on the lines as some of you with either PH, hard or soft water. I dont know which. I have also made coke for my son and it does the exact some thing. Dead flat very quickly. It really doesnt taste watered down. Just like the top has been open on the coke for a day or two. No fizz..

And no pictures of the sister because she is my wife. Too old for most of you children....

You drink tequila and tonic? This is a much bigger issue than melt rate IMO.

Why add water to a drink? It lowers the alcohol by volume. i.e. If you buy a bottle that is 42.5%, then mix your drink, and 5% of the glass is water, you just weakened the liquor to less than 40%. Just buy a lower percentage alcohol!

God is punishing you for diluting good alcohol with a mixer.

Did your drink fizz a lot upon the immediate pour and then went flat?

If you drink quality alcohol a small amount of water helps disrupt the ethanol clusters and helps release the aromatic molecules like guaiacol. This is one reason some of the better whiskies are bottled at a slightly higher proof which helps hold the aromatics until poured. While I use whisky stones for cooling I always use a few drops of R.O. water to open the dram up.

Try this for an experiment. Take one can/bottle of your tonic and put in fridge to get it cold before making your drink. See how the taste goes. For your next tonic, make sure you just leave it at ambient temp before making your drink. Compare your taste. Obviously your tonic/water concentration levels will be different for each, but it'll give you two data points you can extrapolate from subjectively. All things even, it'll come down to the ice(chemical comp of the ice i.e. how filtered the water there is, and maybe the air in the ice, or a mixture of both of these. I used to drink Cokes so much I could literally be a gas chromatograph for the water wherever I was at

Any thoughts? I will bring my own ice in the future but is this a water quality issue or freeze rate?

Is there a chance there is salt on the water? He may need to lower the temp. Any idea what he keeps it on? If the ice isn't as cold that could also impact the food he has stored in it. Food that is frozen at 32 degrees isn't going to last as long as food frozen at.. 10 degrees.

Maybe you're jostling the tonic water (or warming it up too much) on the ride over, and the carbonation is releasing much more than normal when you first open it?

In other words, perhaps the excess carbon dioxide is coming out of solution before it ever hits the ice.
