Service was a lifetime ago for me, but friends sometimes bring it up and I get the ‘thank you’ - people are genuine with it, so I just put up with the mild embarrassment.
I don’t wear clothing or accessories that give a clue to my service, but like someone said, the Vietnam Vets really deserve the thanks. If I see an old timer at a restaurant, I always try to pick up their tab with a note telling them thanks, delivered by their waiter/waitress.

Yeah we’ll I’m not a cop but I work with them every day and most I’ve worked with over the last 14 years are good people. The few bad ones I’ve encountered didn’t seem to be around for long.

That’s where my sentiments lie. Those dudes got a raw deal. Despite that they are the most patriotic guys you’ll ever run across.

I think everyone appreciates being thanked. I do. I do get uncomfortable when people try to pay for my food in restaurants, but I understand they are just being nice. overall, it is nice to be appreciated.

I don't need the attention. I served during peacetime. On Veterans Day, my church asks for veterans to stand so members can recognize our service.

Same. I also feel like there’s this dumb movement to thank everyone for their service including teachers, first responders, secretaries, whatever.

Every one of these people chose their profession for their own selfish reasons, even if that reason was to fulfill a calling of patriotic duty.

The same goes for LEOs. After all of the incidents in the last few years, I always made it a point to thank a policeman when I see one. I have noticed lately that the looks I get seem to make me think they really don’t care to hear it anymore. So, I’ve stopped saying anything. I just smile politely and keep on moving.

This. My neighbors know I am a veteran and thank me for my service on military holidays. I tell them thank you and that’s unnecessary but I thank them all the same.

Thank my family. They are the ones who actually sacrificed. I did my job and enjoyed doing it.

I appreciate it. I don't think it makes me a hero. I appreciate it because it just shows the average American loves this country.

What bothers me is when some guy who topped out as a corporal and probably spent his entire career as a supply pogue at Camp LeJeune acts as if he's entitled to having the masses genuflect when he passes.

Depends on who is saying it.

I can tell if you are pandering vs being genuine.

I don't mind but it's always kind of awkward because I never expect it and end up mumbling something and looking stupid.

I am the same. I had to stop at Walmart one day and didn't have a change of clothes, it was the worst five minutes of shopping.

I appreciate the gratitude, and try to respond with "thank you for your support" but most time it i end up mumbling something and probably look like an idiot.

I say, thank you for your support, and then move along. I'll stop and chat if someone wants to.

Much like other Vets have voiced, I feel so awkward with it. I didn’t join for any personal recognition and so many men/women paid a sacrifice far further than I had to.

I smile, say thanks, and hope that’s the end of it. I don’t want anything paid for, and I think most of us don’t ask for that 10% veteran discount.

I did 30 + years and retired in 2018. I did it willingly and got paid, I'd rather not hear TFYS, but it doesn't bother me either way. It is awkward though. If a hottie wants to thank me with BJ, that would be great.

I would rather not be thanked. It always comes off as an awkward exchange because it’s usually someone that’s a complete stranger.

How do you feel about this?

I don’t really feel anything. If someone thanks me for my service I’m courteous and thank them back. That’s about it.
