For those of you who have served our country in the armed forces, I have a question. Do you like being thanked for your service or would you rather not be thanked?

I used to think that all veterans appreciated being recognized and thanked, but I have heard and read recently that there are some who would rather not be thanked. When I see someone who has served, I now hesitate because I’m not sure if that person will appreciate being approached by a stranger and told thanks.

How do you feel about this?

It’s appreciated, but unnecessary. We, in general, volunteered for service and most would likely do it again if we had to do it all over again.

A simple what’s up is good enough.

Edit: There are some attention seeking douche canoes who crave the attention though. Those dicks are the exception though and probably wasn’t combat arms.

Don’t really think about it honestly.

I’ve always appreciated it, personally. Maybe because I was brought up to thank military members and veterans.

Agreed.

For some it is awkward. Someone asked our TI in basic training what their response is when people hit them with the TYFYS since they didn’t want to respond to someone’s thank you with another thank you.

He had a good response with just saying “I appreciate your support” and that is usually what I go with.

This is the right answer.

I agree chew, it’s something we signed up for with a goal in mind. It is appreciated and nice to hear, I like the retort of “ thank you for your support” .

I don't mind but it's always kind of awkward because I never expect it and end up mumbling something and looking stupid. Especially these days. Since I haven't worn a uniform in years the only time it happens is when I'm applying for something or someone is trying to sell me something so it always catches me off guard.

It's fine though.

I think Vietnam vets should be thanked if seen because they got a really raw deal and dumped on.

I’ve given vets and cops a smile and fist bump while walking past them without necessarily saying anything...I think they get the point.

I personally don't like being thanked, that being said it generally comes from a good place so I try to accept it graciously. Don't get me wrong I don't think it is a bad thing it just makes me feel uncomfortable.

I'm not a fan of it to be perfectly honest.

This. I'm always caught off guard and try to be as gracious as possible. I try to minimized wearing OCPs in public as much as possible

It is a little embarrassing for me tbh. Usually I just nod and say thanks. Heck, except for a few scary times my time was great, and my wife spends the crap out of that retirement check.

I prefer it to be left unsaid. Mostly it's because left hanging as if a response is required.
