Nah....I live in Santa Barbara. If I ever felt like I needed a gun, I'd move.

I'm not a fan of guns.....toI much of a wildcard for me.

Ifi lived in Santa Barbara I probably wouldn't feel the need of a gun either, but It's different out here in Section 13. Please refrain from using your voting power to disarm those of us not fortunate enough to live in places like Santa Barbara.

I grew up with shotguns around. My dad taught my brother and I how to shot. We used to hunt.

Now I do not have the urge to get a gun for safety. I do have my dad's single shot 20 gauge at the house. (lol..no shells..I plan to point and yell bang)

Complete honesty, is there ever moments that you regret not having a gun available for protection? Either home or auto. Situations like this and post Katrina, just some scary shite out there. I know some don't like guns but you'd think people like their safety more so.

Never felt close to unsafe anywhere I've lived as an adult.

Oxford, MS and Nashville, TN.

However, I am moving to a different "sort" of neighborhood soon and will be getting a handgun for protection. I'm pro-logical guns.

i do recall on instance of walking thru the palmetto at Bayou Cocdrie NWR while carrying a .17 HMR. jumped a 300#+ hog, and felt a little nervous about my chances.

headed to Glacier NP in a couple of weeks. Bringing a fresh can of bear spray out there, no guns.

I think there is a big distinction that people fail to make between "regular" gun owners and concealed carry or open carry. I own guns that stay at home, but I've got no interest in having a concealed carry license for my own safety. I understand there are situations where it has saved lives, but I don't personally believe it is a net benefit to me or my family. I don't believe it is as simple as owning a handgun = more safety for you and your family.

Do you go into tests without studying?

No...because when I went into a test I knew there wass a 100% certainty I was going to take a test.

Preparation there is warranted, right?

Likewise, if I knew with 100% certainty that I was going to be in some life threatening position, then I'd be warranted in being armed.

What we're talking about is a sliding scale of risk. For whatever reason, you guys are suggesting that you're far enough on the risky side to feel that owning or carrying a firearm makes sense. At least for me, I disagree.

The issue, which seems unusually hard for some of you guys to accept, is that I am nowhere near being in a position where that level of preparedness is remotely warranted. I'd bet neither are any of you, but that's your business and you can feel free to prepare as you see fit.

But at this point this is coming off like doomsday preppers pointing at reasonable people who refuse to dig up their backyard to create a bunker and stockpile food claiming, "Yeah...well you can go frick yourself if the day ever comes that you need to get underground and have cans of creamed corn!" Right...but until that day comes I'm not going to dig up my yard, stockpile canned goods, and prepare for what's incredibly unlikely to happen to me.

If they allow it, get those little pull string flares. Fit in the pocket, make a loud noise, lots of smoke and shoots a ball of heat about 30 yards. Works when nothing else does. I had to use them several times last year.

Do you even understand what you are saying right here?

I read that as if you are attacked you would like to be armed. So can you guarantee with 100% certainty that you will never be attacked? I understand it is a low percentage, but it 100% that it won't happen?

IdI rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. I grew up hunting and shooting guns. I have also worked a bunch in really bad neighborhoods, so yes, I have been in many positions where using it is a likely situation.

I have an alarm system, motion lights that light up my entire yard, a motion alarm at my gate, and cameras. Am I gonna get robbed any time soon? Not likely. Have I done everything I can to stop that from happening? Yes.

I'm not pushing anything on you. Do what you want. I am having to justify myself in this thread more than anything.

Is this your best argument against gun control?!
Look up the statistics of innocent people murdered by guns vs.being deliberately run over by a vehicle.
Think I'd rather face a nut job trying to hit me with his vehicle versus one with a gun any day.
You're gonna need a stronger argument against gun control.

Never owned a gun

Consider it more and more lately

I try to remain self aware and keep from situations that would require or warrant a gun. Family and In-laws have enough so if push came to shove and we need to march on the capital or some other force I will have one to use no doubt.

It is a personal mindset. I have friends who don't leave home without one and I've got others who are terrified holding one. Neither side is going to convince the other they're wrong for feeling that way.

I'd be interested to examine how people that think like you assess other risks in their daily lives.

I'd be willing to guess that a lot of people going out to buy guns right now don't wear seat belts, or otherwise demonstrate disregard for far more likely threats in their daily lives. I say that in full support of anyone that wishes to exercise their right to bear arms. I'd just be interested to see how they reconcile the odds of being shot by a maniac with the odds of flying through their windshield on any given day.

Unlikely events happen all the time. I think it's important to understand that.

I wear my seatbelt 100% of the time I'm in a vehicle. What does that mean?

Oh and I also wear a life jacket with kill switch attached to me anytime I am running my boat.

And I absolutely do not text while I am driving.

I don't own a gun. I grew up with them and have shot many. I don't think they truly provide protection. I think in many situations pulling one could make the situation worse. I live in Oakland and don't need one. I doubt in many areas the threat is great enough to require one. However I don't care how many guns someone else owns either.

People pick and choose based on their bias as to which risks they'll address and which ones they'll ignore.

People feel like they need to justify gun ownership so they say it is a safety issue, but in reality there is no need to justify it since it is perfectly legal. I think many handgun owners just like owning and shooting guns, and there is nothing wrong with that, but they say it is a safety thing to avoid any criticism.
