I figured we were going to have to buy a minimum of a TI-85 or 86 for Calc. She was told at orientation that she would not be allowed to use a calculator for Calc.
One of her scholarships also gave her a laptop at the presentation dinner. She was always a Mac kid but has learned to love this laptop. Student software is cheap.

I also had a TI-86, but we could only use a TI-36x pro or equivalent for most classes. That's all you can use for the FE IIRC

She just finished her freshman year so she still has a long way to go. They made her buy a lesser version in high school but she is used to it. It may be what she will end up using later but for now, no calculators allowed.

I don't even think I pulled out the TI-84 because all of my classes wouldn't allow a graphing calculator. This was my go to because of the calculus functions. Very nice calculator for 20.

Tiger dad—we are in the same boat. I called The ME department and they recommended a surface book 1 or 2. 8 gig or 16 gig.

I had a TI-89 I believe. We could use them for core engineering classes a lot of the time. In those, they weren't really testing our understanding of the math itself, and more the concept. Could never use them in math classes though. Half my engineering classes let us write out a cheat sheet, so having pre-programmed formulas really was no advantage other than a time savings.

You dinosaur. It's all about the TI-83

If money is no object, the Thinkpad p52 is the latest mobile workstation that Lenovo makes. I have the p51 for work and its quite the workhorse. You may be able to find the p51 for a lower cost as it's last year's model but still highly expandable. Most mobile workstations are going to be certified to run most if not all engineering software suites.
The bad thing about it is that it weighs about 6lbs, so it's a bit heftier than most other laptops and requires a 170W power supply that's massive.

Back in my day all you needed was a slide rule and a calculator watch. That was when we had to use our brains though.
No calculator watch in my day, Post Versalog slide rule which I still have, and hardcopy of CRC tables.

Man, all of my Jr and Sr level ChE classes allowed any calculator you wanted. As one of my profs said, "this is engineering, not math, bring whatever calculator you want, cause you ain't getting the homework questions on the test simply with different numbers".
TI-89 (dang near computer calculator) FTW

you had to add this? Not a principle yet i see.
If I’m working on my own, it’s $120/hr.
No reason to be greedy since I have no overhead and I don’t have to pass profits on to someone else... Well, except the wife.

Which on a quick search you dont need a beast of a computer to run. at minimum it says "Any Intel" All i am saying is for college level computing a freaking word processing computer will get you a degree.
Completely missed the point of what I said

Surface Pro. 8 or 16GB version.

Just don't try bringing the 89 to an ACT testing center lol

That's most standardized tests. Couldn't use them in the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam either. I'm actually starting at my TI30 "regular scientific" calculator I had to buy to take that exam 8 years ago. Use it today way more than I do my graphing calculator (not even sure where it's buried at in my home office).
