Question about Sunshine Bridge

I have a vague memory of the Sunshine Bridge, at one point, having a metal grate surface with no concrete on top. Am I imagining this?
I remember driving across it for the first time on my own and being able to see straight down to the river below.
Anyone else remember this?

I can’t remember that detail. But I do remember when there was a toll on the Donaldsonville side as a kid.

I definitely remember the toll also.

The boat that hit it should have taken the whole thing down

Triggers a memory of Huey P Long bridge. Cant swear to this. But that old version of the bridge used to scare the chit out of me when driving over as a young kid. Especially when a train shared the bridge with you.

My grandmother used to hit the curb of that bridge all the time. I also remember taking drivers ed and they made you drive across it.

If so then it would have been more tham 40-50 years ago.
Originally it had tolls in both directions.

If you are remember the Sunshine Skyway Bridge outside of Tampa, it definitely had that grid. The grid is memorable in the worst way. And then it came down accidentally, which made the memory even worse.

That picture could give me nightmares.

Somebody refresh my memory, but was this the bridge that kept the toll going for long after it was supposed to be ended and then turned into a well kept money making secret until it was later discovered?

When we were kids my step bros and I used to go over it riding in the back of my dad’s pick up, before and after the accident.
It always gave me the heebie jeebies.

It’s never been a drawbridge, never had any metal grating surface. It was built with almost 200 feet of clearance for ships

Sunshine Bridge in Donaldsonville, Louisiana. My memory matches that kind of grate.

If the seats in that car weren’t brown, they are now.
Imagine standing on the manual brakes in that thing if you were driving when that happened.

I think the grating was in the median. Not the driving surface. They redid the whole surface some time around 2000.
Thinking about it again, maybe the expansion joints on the road surface were covered with grating too, but it would have been small sections.

I worked nearly under it for a few years and we would hear the tires of cars squealing on the curb where the bridge had an offset on the northbound span all morning during rush hour traffic.
