you can go to a number of the home generator websites and plug in you house electrical load and they will tell you recommended gen set size
Having the electrical panel and gas meter next to each other will make it less expensive then if they were separated.
when you do get quotes, make sure you tell them you want the meter changed fro1/4 PSI gas (4.5" W.C.) to a 2# meter. then have their plumber install a step down regulator for the house and another step down regulator for the generator. generator will want a higher pressure, especially when everyone in the neighborhood is running a generator and the gas supply is taxed.
typically the house will be 4.5" W.C. and the gen will be tuned to 7"-11" W.C.

I bought my 22kw generac in 2020 with transfer switch for $5500. I spent $1k on generac all in one wire. I needed 120 feet. The connections are color coded on the generator as well. Installation is pretty simple. I only had to run about 8feet of pipe for gas. All in I was about $7k when finished

No kidding. I’m 2800 living with a ln in ground pool. I only needed a 20kw but the 22kw was only $200-300 more

I’m guessing you are in Prairieville. If so, I’d call Optimize and 2 or 3 other vendors and get some quotes. That’s what I did and I went with them. They are awesome! Took care of all the permits, bought and installed all my CO2 sensors, arranged everything with Entergy and their customer service is top notch. They really are set it and forget it. And they were the second cheapest quote. And the cheapest quoted company is now out of business.
Also, 38K seems like a lot. That’s water cooled type of power there. Do you plan on mining bitcoin while the power is out? If the power goes out, you really just need to run essentials.

These home generators are keeping up with the Joneses mentality.
In most cases, yes. My my parents are in their 70s. I really didn't want either of them out dumping gas into a hot generator, or fighting lines to get more fuel, or any other work when the grid is down or a storm is on us. They have enough anxiety as it is.

get some AC soft start for your A/C units.

If you live close by, you should do it.

30kw or 38kw
That’s liquid cooled territory where prices from air cooled essentially double.
Generac makes a 26kw air cooled now and you should be able to get full install package for 15k range. Plus or minus depending on gas line length and company’s pricing aggressiveness.

Do adding these generators add value to your home? I have a tri fuel generator and a few portable AC that we break out when we lose power once every other year. Just curious as the $15-25k seems a lot for something that occurs quite seldom. I live around Baton Rouge as well. Notice a lot of people adding these systems all the time around me.

I’m a Briggs and Stratton dealer. Homeimpbydl@gmail.com …..if you are in BR area I can quote you, I’m in Prairieville. I can also consult, you don’t have to go that large with soft starts and load shedding but we can look at it all and come up with the best solution

Does anyone like a Generac over a Kohler?

Just looking at product pricing, and guessing labor and switch size a 30kW liquid cooled installed would be in the neighborhood of 20-25k, going larger the cost starts to jump. The difference in unit price to go to a 35kW is 4K
I could do a 26w with soft starts and load shedding, if needed, around 18k again depending on switch size and other variables

Generac is an inferior product to Kohler, Briggs, Cummins…

I love my Generac, it's been good so far. The only drawback is the conditions of the "so-called warranty". Basically, I'm charged $1000 per year for 2 maintenance visits that last no longer than 15 minutes. If my generator fails at any time , whether in an outage or during the maintenance check, I will be given a small discount on parts and labor to fix it. If it happens during an outage, I will be on the list before anyone who calls that isn't covered by the maintenance warranty. Some warranty, huh? It just seems a little outrageous to me.

Those are BS contracts the generator dealers are scalping people on. Generac doesn’t have that long of a warranty so they basically are baiting you into an insurance policy.
Briggs comes with a 7 year warranty or you can buy a 10 year warranty unit. The only maintenance required is annual or 100 hours on either unit.

Got a 26kw Kohler installed in Houston in May 2025. It was $19,000 including 10 year warranty & 5 year maintenance plan.
House is 3,700 square feet. This will power every appliance & A/C unit at once if needed.

I put a 26kw kohler in last year. Was 18k. Gas was about 5ft away. Electrical they had to do a conduit to my panels in the garage and install the transfer switches(2 of them). My main electrical and gas are on opposite sides of the house, so they did the transfer switches at the panels.
I was quoted 21k for generac 26kw.
38kw does seem excessive even with the 3rd a/c unit. Seems that they should be able to do load management and/or also do soft starts on your a/c units.
I have 4200sqft and 2 a/c units.
Only other thing worth mentioning is that even id your gas and electrical is side by side, still matters how close to windows etc for code reasons. We only had a couple locations that we could place ours due to windows
