Dreading and watching the clock right now but know it's the right thing to do. It's been a good 12 years. Happy Friday!!

He gave you his best. That's all you can ask for
I really like this piece. You can tell Rudyard was going through the same sort of thing

this.
Make sure to be in there though when they put him down.
The old man deserves you to be with him in his last moments.
Some people sit out of the room because its too tough and that shouldn't happen. Yhe dog deserves for you to be there when he moves on, hes been there for you all of those years

This. No way my dog is spending his last day on Earth alone. And no way could I focus on work anyways. I would just be with my dog making his last day the best I could for him.

It’s such a tough thing to do. They truly are like a member of the family. My wife and I grieved for a while. Very emotional. Sorry for your loss. I surely wish dogs had longer life spans.

My baw...shite, if I were you, I'd tell the boss I have an important appointment I have to make. Go home at lunch, stop and get a nice steak on the way.
Spend the afternoon with your friend. Cook the steak up, best as you can. Then split it. Hell, let him eat at the table This one time.
Or you can eat on the floor with him. But I assure you, your time spent with him this last afternoon, will be far more valuable than any time you'd spend at work.
Wrote this some years back. Just remembered it.
Dog Years
A dog, what’s a dog?
Just a mis’rable beast,
All covered in fur,
And a haven for fleas,
Then they look up at us,
With deep pleading eyes,
And we say, “come, ye mutt,
Let’s go off for a ride.”
Then they stick their head out,
Of the window and drool,
Like a great grinnin’ git,
Floppy eared furry fool,
Then they chew on the chair,
And they swallow your shoes,
You can fuss, at the muss,
But they just look confused,
For they don’t understand,
They’re just glad that you’re home,
Here to toss ‘em a stick,
Here to feed them a bone,
So they seep in your soul,
‘Tween the laughter and tears,
With you as your dog days,
Quickly turn to dog years,
And the spring in their step,
Less than when they were pups,
When you open the door,
They still perk their head up,
And their slobbery kisses,
That greet you each day,
Have a strange way of putting,
All your worries at bay,
But their hourglass empties,
And confirms your worst fears,
For a dog’s days are numbered,
How they fly, those dog years,
But the truth of our bargain,
Is time’s merely borrowed,
And to quote the bard Shakespeare,
“Parting is such sweet sorrow”,
For one day we’ll lay them,
To rest in a hole,
As we bury there with them,
A part of our soul,
So we swallow our heartache,
And choke back the tears,
We should count our days lucky,
They gave us their dog years.

Yes and there have been numerous articles from vets saying how terrified the animals are when their humans aren’t there with them. They spend their last moments alive scared and frantically looking for their human.
You have to be a selfish coward to voluntarily put your pet through that. I understand in some situations you might not be able to be there when it happens. But if you can be there….their eyes should be able to find yours in their last moments. You owe them at least that much.

Hate to hear that, that’s a painful experience. Prayers for you.

BT/DT and it doesn't get easier.
If it is remotely an option for you, pay the extra cost to have the vet come to your home. I've done that my last couple dogs and it's worth every penny.

We had a family cat that lived to about 11 or 12 who ended up having kidney issues and was suffering badly. I went in there and held him while they gave him the shot. It was one of the hardest things I've ever done in my life.
I was trying not to cry in front of these vet folk but I couldn't hold it in. It was awful but I wouldn't have done it any other way.
We have a 2 year old lab mix right now and she's the best dog I've ever had. I know (hope anyway) it's a long time off but I'll be in the room with her too one day.
OP - a lot of vets offer a service where they'll come to your house and do it. You may want to look into it. We had a dog go that way many years back and it helped immensely.

This.
Our last two Goldens were put down at home…surrounded by family in a place they were comfortable….they had no idea what was happening and their last moments were full of love vs stress…
It’s always hard but this makes it easier all around.

It’s also better to do at home if possible if there are other pets in the house. They can have a really hard time grieving as well.
This way they know their buddy is gone. They won’t just be standing at the door wondering when him/her will return, not knowing where their friend went.

I would take off but I was off all last week. Would have been a tough sell to the boss, unfortunately.
