Don't feel bad, will likely nuke mine this weekend too. 16 years is a good run, but I'll miss her.

“ Dogs’ lives are short, too short, but you know that going in. You know the pain is coming, you’re going to lose a dog, and there’s going to be great anguish, so you live fully in the moment with her, never fail to share her joy or delight in her innocence, because you can’t support the illusion that a dog can be your lifelong companion.
There’s such beauty in the hard honesty of that, in accepting and giving love while always aware that it comes with an unbearable price.” – Dean Koontz

I'm sorry to hear this. They are man's best friend for a reason. That's why it hurts so bad.

Go home and hang out with him, give him a treat.

Let your face be the last thing he sees.

Would have been a tough sell to the boss, unfortunately.

So you didn’t even try?

Be comforted knowing you gave him a great life.

If it is remotely an option for you, pay the extra cost to have the vet come to your home. I've done that my last couple dogs and it's worth every penny.

Highly recommend it. Lowers a lot of stress on the pet and you as well.

Right?

Frame it like this.

Boss, I know I was gone last week and I understand if you say no, but my dog is being put down today. I thought I could handle it but I really want the chance to tell my buddy goodbye.

Is there any way I could go home at lunch and spend the rest of his short time with him? If not, I understand, and if you let me I'll do my best to make it up next week.

So what do you think? Can I go give him some company in his last hours?

If you can't get the day off work, Why not wait until tomorrow? unless your dog is in severe pain.

You have a point. Unless there are extenuating circumstances (it's the weekend before Mardi Gras too, the vet might have plans and he might not want to do it the old fashioned way.) you could try that. But if he's in serious pain I wouldn't want him to linger either

Man it’s always hard. You sound like a solid dude that will hold him as he passes. Be strong for him.

Yes tons of pain. Can barely walk at this point and not eating or drinking much. On top of that he is blind so quality of life just isn’t there

Just went home on my lunch break and cooked him some scrambled eggs and turkey. It’s the least I can do given my work circumstances.

Sorry to hear of this. Prayers for you and the family. There’s no easy way during those times. Just try to be there with him as much as you can like others have said

I'm sure he appreciates it. What's his name? I can tell he's a Good Boy.

Yeah... had to do that on New Years days. Our dog was 12 years also, had heart failure with rapid decline over Christmas.

Took him to the animal ER 3 times to get fluid out of his lungs and oxygen therapy. He was on 4 medications to attempt to strengthen his cardiac output, but condition deteriorated despite everything.

He was grasping for air, unable to stop coughing, could not rest/sleep, and stopped eating... so we all knew it was time...
