Russian President Vladimir Putin raised the specter of nuclear warfare in Syria Wednesday, saying he hoped he’d never have to use the cataclysmic weapons in his fight against terrorists.
The chilling threat came as Putin and Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced that Kalibr cruise missiles launched by the Rostov-on-Don submarine successfully hit designated targets in Raqqa — the de facto capital of ISIS.
Putin noted that the new cruise missile can be equipped with both conventional and nuclear warheads.
The targets destroyed in the latest wave of Russian airstrikes included a munitions depot, a factory manufacturing mortar rounds and oil facilities belonging to “terrorists,” Shoigu said.
A U.S. defense official confirmed Russia had notified Israel and the U.S. of the airstrikes in advance.

Yay cruise missiles. Good to know you guys are taking the million dollar hammer for the 5 cent nail approach. Welcome to the age of modern warfare.

Might as well. It should help alleviate global warming too. 2 birds 1 stone.

Anyone advocating for this needs to step back from the ledge. In no way, shape or form should nuclear weapons be used unless this world is ready for some severe destruction. Many other nuclear players in the region with so far, cooler heads but if Russia did that all would take it as game time and god knows what could happen with itchy fingers.
And don't even think the US would not be affected. That suggestion by Putin can put this on a very slippery slope.

People still think nuking an ideal is a viable option?

If he were to nuke Raqqa I disagree. ISIS doesn't have any nuclear-armed friends.
But if, as some have suggested, nukes were to be used in Mecca or Medina I don't think it would be long before a Pakistani bomb detonated inside a major Western city.

i think Putin knows this would be a horrible idea. I think the FSB probably suspects ISIS is on the move with a WMD and this proclamation may be intended to provoke ISIS in disclosing that, hoping it would result in info collecting and a way to intercept it.
Can't forget Putin is former KGB. There's always a game involved.

This could be true and I agree with your last statement. But even a tactical nuclear strike could set that whole region - and by region I mean for the most part the whole Middle East- into much more of a tailspin than it already is and it is a powder keg now. It isn't a matter or ISIS friends - it is a matter of all surrounding countries national security. They drop one what stops them from two and so on?
This scenario could make us look at North Korea like it is Canada.

What good would a nuke even really do? These guys are all spread out, a nuke would kill a handful which is great but isn't really going to take care of the larger situation all while creating a humanitarian crisis worse than the one we already have.
