Parents are the problem. The reality is students should not be allowed to have a phone until they are in high school. Period. The root of 90% of the problems in middle schools has to do with cell phones! They're too immature to use a cell phone in the correct manner and ùse it to play games, set up drug transactions and posting stupid comments that lead to fights and bullying.
If you wonder why kids can't read or write, blame it on cell phones. When you allow kids to have a toy (a cell phone), your son or daughter is only hurting their education.

If you need to contact your child, call the office and they will get them.
In top of that, East Asian countries, which dominate in education and academics, have no phone in class policy and they survive.

How did kids survive in schools before cell phones?
By playing games on their calculators. There will always be distractions. This all can be solved with proper parenting

Pretty dumb take here. We had cellphones with us in the event that we needed to call our parents after school in case of an emergency or if theres a sudden change in your afternoon plans. It's fine to have one. It becomes a problem when you are using it during school hours to distract yourself from class.
This is a pretty dumb take here. Did you have a cellphone or a smartphone? You think these kids are pissed off about not having their phones because it makes them feel safe knowing they can call their parents when they need something?
I don't think its a coincidence that today, people as old as their late 20s still depend on their parents to do everything for them. That's what happens when you can just call mommy and daddy anytime a decision needs to be made, to ask them what to do, instead of having to figure things out on your own.
The younger people (I'd say anyone in their late 20s and younger) seem to fall into two categories. You have those who are smart, who really have their shite together. They are more prepared for their future than any generation before them. They have things mapped out by the time they are a junior in HS. Then the other category where the majority of them fall into. They are in college and even starting their career still depending on their parents.
If you are a 26, 27 year old dude who calls your parents anytime something doesn't go the way you expected it to go, to cry to them about how its not fair or ask them how to handle the change you really should be ashamed of yourself.

Well that’s the problem... the students not having the respect or discipline to not use it.
An outright ban is an insane take.
All you have to do is install "mailbox" lockers for cell phones and issue one to each kid. When kid comes to school, phone goes in the locker. Kid leaves, gets phone out and leaves.
if any of you have been to the Baton Rouge City Court you will know what I am talking about. At one time cell phones were not allowed by the public in the building. You had to lock them up outside before you went inside through the metal detectors.

My goodness, man. Playing on calculators vs. kids on phones at school today aren’t even in the same ballpark for comparison’s sake.

My state senator wrote that shite. Such a stupid law, not on its merits, but now school boards have to deal with this shite. It’s like a no pants sagging law. Okay let’s implement one. Oh great white key feels better now. But now the cops are expected to enforce it? It’s just damn silly.

How did our society get to the point that kids cannot be given strict rules for learning and discipline in a public classroom and school space?
I totally disagree with removing cellphones from schools. How else are we supposed to get video of these creepy teachers indoctrinating our kids? I absolutely want my children to film if a teacher starts telling his students he uses female pronouns or starts talking about Trump needing to die or starts telling white students they're the cause of all the black students' problems and conservatives are Nazis, etc etc etc. I do not trust these people to report on their peers on their own.

lol.
god forbid there’s ever a school-wide emergency at your child’s school, the school certainly isn’t going to immediately notify the hundreds of parents about each of their children individually on their status. they’ll wait until the issue is over, evaluate the situation, craft a generic email, and then blast that email to all parents. it could be hours before you hear of an incident and then even then it would be a broad overview (probably tainted view) of the situation.
honestly besides government wtf else is run more poorly than schools? nowadays feels like a majority of the country’s school systems are run by blue-haired leftist weirdos, yet you all want to let them disseminate information on their terms when it is convenient for them?
I truly believe if we polled this thread, that most of these replies are from people who do not have kids in the 10-18 range and therefore just way out of touch on the subject. In 2024, it’s just unrealistic to send your child to school without having the ability to directly connect to them if needed. As I said earlier, I suppose it makes a difference with the watch compared to the smart phones, but there’s not many (if any at all) kids from 4th grade on that don’t at least have a watch for communication. And honestly it’s getting younger. I’ve seen a handful of Kindergarten students with watches, 1st and 2nd more so, and then by 3rd-4th is when it picks up that nearly every single kid has one. It’s not to communicate every hour or whatever other BS being spouted in this thread by the old farts, it’s a simple check in when they’ve got there and a check in when the day is over. And then god forbid something big during the day goes down, it’s there as a direct line of communication to their parent. So I just have a hard time believing that people in this thread know what they’re talking about. They clearly haven’t seen that 90+% of kids have this already so they’re just spewing from their arse. Parents aren’t going to be willing to just say to the schools (especially public) here take my kids and I’ll stay out of it. Look at the OT alone, teachers banging students. States like CA, NY, etc. teaching all sorts of weird shite to your kids without telling parents. Not telling you of sexual stuff, trans weirdo bullshite, all of it. Parents aren’t going to willfully go along with banning that open direct line of communication to their kid. It’s a different world. A lot of you (probably without children in the age range) are just talking out of your arse. Probably doesn’t help that the average age on here is like 65 either with the “back in my day” crowd
In 2024 this is just so absurd that it would even be proposed as a ban. Seriously it is laughable. It would be a nonstarter at an extremely large majority of communities. If you got kids who can’t reasonably behave and pay attention at school despite having a phone or smart watch etc. that’s on that specific kid and his family. that’s a parenting problem. (Or in the case of videoing school fights, a cultural problem).

I taught for a few years before going fully into IT.
Bought a (illegal in US) cell signal blocker with a remote control.
Placed it in the drop ceiling of my classroom. Turned it on when I was teaching, off when I was alone. Range was perfect. Only blocked my classroom.
Kids would occasionally complain about their cell service and I’d be like “I dunno, must be a dead zone”
