Pretty common with tires.
I usually try to buy from discount tire direct but they didn’t have some oddball trailer tire I needed before so I brought the tires and wheels in loose.
They charged for mount, balance, and new stems and sent me on my way.

pretty sure that's what the repair shop is getting from the O'Reilly's, AutoZones, etc.

Perhaps your business shouldn't look to bend people over for cheap parts.

There's plenty of restaurants where you can bring them a fish and they'll cook it up.
I’ve never heard of or seen anyone ever do this, and I am/know lots of fisherman.
What is an example of a place that will do that?

I'll give you tires. Different animal altogether and market has changed from what it used to be.

You're one of those guys that marks up your parts 100% I'll guess.

I wanted a new faucet for my kitchen sink and a new spigot for my bathtub, and the plumber made me order the ones I wanted and only came back to install them once they arrived.
Yeah, most small jobs we've had done like that, we've been told to pick it all out and have it delivered. They come when it arrives.
Hell, I think we even order our own mini split A/C units for the A/C company to install.

I'll bet you there a lot on here that know how much it costs to run a business
And there are a few that know the discounts shops get from NAPA/O'Reily/GM/etc.

In a dealership selling equipment while offering parts and services, the profit derived from parts and services is referred to as absorption. Absorption means your fixed costs and labor costs. If you can operate +100% absorption then you get to stay in business and the majority of retained earnings comes from sales of whatever product your dealership sells.
If I own a dealership and you bring me parts then I can still make some profit so I may take the job, I may not. Also, you will not be prioritized over a client who allows me to make margin on both parts and labor. Nor will I bear any burden for mistakes. The information available in reviews often springs from someone who created a bad transaction for a business, got a bad result from said transaction and then posted a very poor review of the service provider. No thank you

Harbor Docks, Boathouse, and Dewey Destin's are a few in Destin that will.
You've never seen this anywhere on the Gulf Coast?

Just do it and charge a bit more. Just make them understand that you can't guarantee their part, like you could if you got it from the manufacturer.

part of a shop's business model is buying at wholesale and selling at retail, just like any other for profit business. take your wine to a restaurant, and you would expect a corking fee. it is how they make a living.

I can understand some of what the OP is frustrated with.
Example: JoeBob has an intermittent start (crank) issue with his old truck. JoeBob goes to the parts store and gets a replacement starter and brings it to his mechanic and says he wants it swapped out.
Mechanic says okay, you have done your troubleshooting and we will swap it for you.
Four days later, JoeBob after going back to the parts store and getting his old starter back (lucky they still had it) is back at the shop and tells mechanic he wants them to swap out the new starter with the original part and fix the intermittent cranking problem.
Problem is traced after a short time to be ignition switch which causes more time wasted for JoeBob.
JoeBob, not happy with himself that he is being charged twice now for the needless removal and install and has to see if his parts place will accept a return on a now used electrical part.
So how much time and money did JoeBob save after all that?
