I grew up in Georgia and people said both. Seems like the people with the heavier southern accent said pee can.

My theory. Its a french pronunciation. There is a town in Louisiana called Pecaniere. Pa-cahn-yeah. Notice on the map that the pronunciation NOT pee-can is centered around Louisiana.

You doubted which was the correct pronunciation?! I would have told that yankee jackass that if he said pee-can one more time that I would have to get a rope.
If you want to get super technical about it, the absolute correct way is puh-coh(n). No “n” if the beginning of the next word starts with a consonant. Pronounce the “n” if the next word starts with a vowel. ie: puh-coh pie. Puh-cohn egg. Any other way and you just don’t have any Southern charm.
